The title says it all really. My Johnson 50HP outboard electric choke is dead.

Is this something that someone who is fairly technically minded could replace or is it a mechanic job?

Should be simple enough but you don't say if it is an electric primer pump as in Dangar Marine's video or an electrically operated flap type choke. Both types have been fitted to 50 Hp Johnsons.
The model number tells all .... quote it whenever you ask questions or order parts

Either way have you checked that power is being applied to the solenoid and have you checked the coil. ?

I used to get a problems on an electric choked OB . Corrosion of dashboard switch enough to reduce current to solenoid stopping it operating. Also corrosionn of solenoid plunger causing it to jam . Contact cleaner for switch and a plus gas soalkng of the solenoid solved the problem. Possible you may have burnt out coil on solenoid but is usually prevented by appropriate fusing. AGREE as above from Vic check for voltage either side of coil if voltage ok then check current if no current then check dash switch.

I don’t actually know for definite which system is fitted. I inherited the boat and this is what I was told. It runs if it’s played with manually.

I’m hoping to get across to it tomorrow and have a little tinker.

If it did need replacing, is it an expensive fix?

Which dashboard switch are you talking about? Sorry, probably a fairly simple answer.

How would one check the voltage either side of the coil? I have a multimeter. Again a very simple question my mind has just gone blank all of a sudden!

Using your meter on the 20 volt DC range measure the volts across the choke/ primer coil while you attempt to operate it by pressing the keyswitch or what ever you do to operate it
If you see 12 volts applied and it does not operate check the coil continuity
If you dont see 12 volts applied you will have to investigate the reason

Cannot tell you UK prices but if its the primer pump type in Dangmar Stu's video the coil is about $200 in the US.
The coil for the solenoid operated flap type of choke is not available

You will need to know the year ... you can find this from the model number at http://shop.evinrude.com/media/document/ModelNumberReference.pdf

You may be able to find a Seloc workshop manual which covers your motor at Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!
Other wise copies of the original owners manual and workshop manual can be bought from Original outboard product and service manuals for Johnson, Evinrude, Gale, and OMC

I’ve been informed it’s the flap type, which is a tad annoying but I’ll get it to work.

Fairly old engine then ? .... 1982 or earlier I think.

All of us Johnson and Evinrude owners are going to have problems with parts now that BRP have ditched Evinrude, as well as Johnson :(

Looks like it. I’ve just checked the model number and it does suggest 1981, Belgium model.

What options are available to me?
