I'm no fan of jet-skiers but the idea that you didn't try to avoid him seems contrary to all that I have learnt in relation to sailing. Would it seem funny if this bloke (presumably fat,shaven-head and no neck to make the caricature complete)had not surfaced?
I don't normally do serious but this just seems a bit weird.
just a light hearted tale, I am sure. Ian would have made every effort to avoid him if there was a real risk, and if there had been a less than happy outcome, he wouldnt have seen it as funny at all.
he wasn't hurt and no i really couldn't avoid him 16 tons don't stop that quick. we only nudged him a bit and he toppled over like a ninepin.
pretty narrow channel as well an it was blowing on the nose!
ian
If you're referring to the Jetskiiers as your sport ... then plagued, I don't know about ... but certainly there are some idiots about .... but then there are a similar number in saily boats, dinghies and mobos ... I would imagine that it is not quite as many that nick cars for joyriding though.

To make things worse you liken jetskiers to people who nick and joyride cars! I've never done either, in fact such people disgust me. Don't get me started on what I think of some yacht owners.
I'm sure there are some nasty bits of work who own jet skis who break the law in other areas, I'm sure they're a few rich super nasty criminals living the life in the med on their very large sailing yachts purchased with dodgy money as well, maybe their crimes weren't nicking and joyriding cars but probably an awful lot worse.
Again, making a joke of hitting another boat is not funny, it is sick.
As for my profile, I have no idea why thats changed, location should say Portsmouth and the line above should say Bombardier, 215HP now.

Am I the only one that finds this a bit odd?

I know Ian personally and have the greatest respect for him ... not only as a person, but also as one the best Skippers around ... he has experience that many here lack ... (apologies to the forum - but true). I am sure that Ian would not have done anything to injure / ram / run over the guy ... I am sure that he did all possible. But Ian also likes to jest ... so I take his post as one of jest on an incident that only had the guy spluttering from being dunked.
If it had been me ? A different story - having been at the bad end of a few Jet Ski incidents and nearly lost wife overboard because of one outside Cowes ...
We now have the darn things carving up our river ... completely illegal as the speed restriction is well below JS speed observed. 2nd - having checked with loxcal authority - none have requisite licences .... so in any incident they will lose all.
This is just getting silly now and your use of words like tw@t and t@sser are straight out of the playground
Everyone is pleased that the pwc rider wasn't hurt, and nobody would condone any deliberate attempt to collide. At least I hope not
Accept that there's a misunderstanding over the wording of the original post, anyone who knows Ian or has sailed with him knows he wouldn't do this deliberately
m,
as one who carves the written word for your chosen profession, I fail to see how your insight does not detect humour and irony here, rather than malicious intent.
I would also hope that you could raise the level of your prose above the 't' words.
To Clarify:
I didn't ask for the jet skier to buzz around in the bay!
I could not avoid him as he weaved from side to side in front of my bow then stopped dead in a narrow channel, as anyone who's been into Rodney Bay would know just how narrow.
There is not enough room to ram a heavy 42 footer with a long keel into reverse and end up sideways!
As for the jet skier he was unharmed, appologetic if a little shocked.
So if i make light of it, and that makes me clever a t@sser or t@at then so beit.
But jet skiers please remember we cant stop by closing the throttle and if you are going to break down in front of us give us a little more room. If you want kicks then another option is to take up skate boarding in front of a combine harvester.
talking about making a joke about hitting another vessel ....
I have, in the long past, nearly sliced a Fireball dinghy in two with my 420 ... that was quite funny, the stern sank and they did a penalty turn pirouette style ... certainly wasn't done intentionally and I'm still friends with the crew of the dinghy ...
Take a look in the Scuttlebutt and Mobo forums - there are quite a number of posters who post their own cockups from where they've touched another vessel coming into a marina etc etc ...
The original post had neither humour nor irony. It said that IG was following an annoying Jet Skier into port. The Jet Skier stopped and IG ran him down, exhibiting poor seamanship and a level of glee that is, frankly, sickening. I can indeed write without resorting to the language of the playground, but there are occasions (when dealing with particularly stupid people) where it is appropriate and effective.
Well, a little levity then.
Journalistically, there was no mention of the word annoying in the original post.
It is established that the Boat was travelling in a narrow channel with limited ability for manoeuvre
It was stated that the Jetski was buzzing him.
Also stated that it apparently broke down just in front of him.
So who displayed the poor seamanship? Do you suppose that the fully functioning Jetski could safely keep a distance as the much faster more manoeuverable craft? Or do you think that the Jetski #might'# have been buzzing the bow of the boat when it unfortunately broke?
Also, emotively, you say it ran him down. No mention of that either. One way or another, the Jetskier appeared to the stern of the boat, but we dont know if he was sucked under the boat or passed to one side, maybe bumping along the hull, maybe not.
So I dont think your comments are appropriate or effective. Quite distortive actually.
