Jet ski again but my mistake?

Its all very well discussing Colregs - but Jetskis are not recognised as 'ships' in the courts, so Colregs can not apply. Leaves us free to mow em down IMHO. If only!

But in any case how many Jetski drivers even know what Colregs are. None of them round our part of the world do - thats for sure!

Jet Skis

Here in West Australia Jet Skis are very definitely regarded as a normal vessel. This means they must be registered be driven by a person holding a Recreational Skipper's Ticket comply with local speed limits and carry the prescribed safety gear.
In most popular boating areas water skiing is forbidden except in designated areas. The towing of any person on tube board or similar is water skiing. An observer must be watching the tow at all times.

You might think all these rules draconian but boating particularly small trailer type power boats are very popular here. (Aprox one registered boat for every 20 population.) So much so that tragedies have driven the government to make the rules that we (I) happily live with. The rules are backed up by some 20 odd patrol vessels across the state and they are often seen with offenders bailed up for breaking speed limit or checking safety gear or skipper's ticket.

I suggest that despite a long sea going heritage for UK that recreational boating and especially things like Jet skis are yet to become really popular and if global warming continues expect more small boats and more regulations.(the colonies are well ahead) olewill

I would not wish to imply that all jetskiers are looneys. Recently my wife and I were put put putting in our tender out to our mooring when two approaching jetskiers seeing us came to a halt and waited for us to get clear before continuing. We waved a thankyou. Unfortunately this seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Recently while on our boat my wife was on the foredeck getting ready to cast off when two jetskis bore down on us at full speed from directly ahead. When they got almost close enough to touch they separated one going down each side of our boat with the resulting spray and wake. Anyway, onward and upward.

On a fairly recent first trip on the Kingswear Castle with some of my family, around Sheppey, I was almost dumbstruck by the idiocy of three jet skiers showing off - finally one came off to the cheers of many of the passengers - the Medway area does seem to have a problem.

Please read my earlier post on this topic - if you believe it to be innacurate please cite references which say that Jetskis are not ships and/or not covered by Colregs?
