Evening all,

Just checking my insurance - due for renewal next month, I have noticed in the small print that it does not cover me for singlehanded sailing at night, bit of a problem for Jester !

Could one of the Team recommend a friendly insurance company?

As always many thanks for all replies.

Just ask your existing insurer as a start. Normal policies would not cover you at all, so you need to tell them what you plan and get a quote for the coverage you want. Not all companies will be interested in taking those kinds of risks, so you may find you have to go elsewhere - or not have any cover other than third party.

Telephone them & explain what you are doing. Don't call it a race, explain it as a supported rally & point out that no-one could go if all insurances had that clause & you will have to go elsewhere if they can't change it. Also point out that you have done the qualifying sail already without incident (err if you have) and the chances are that they will cover you.

It is not a supported rally. It is a non-event. That is the whole point of the Jester!

Comprehensive cover is impossible; third party is possible but pretty worthless unless you need to flash the policy when entering a marina.

Logically, there should be no limit to cruising ground with third party insurance , in fact, the farther you are from land the less chance of a claim - but then, when did logic ever apply.

(snip).

I know there is no on passage support, but there is organisation, & registration required. That should imply to an insurance company that there is some attempt at control over the capabilities of entrants. that is what I meant. It should reduce the percieved (& actual) acturial risk.

It makes sense to me to relate it to something like the ARC which has a fairly well established record - as indeed does the Jester. I would consider the risk of Jester participation to be lower than that of any johnny setting out on a passage on his own. I have an aquaintance with 3 unsuccessful transat attempts to his name, 3 boats lost & lucky to survive the experiences - but he did write an entertaining book about it.

The man behind Jester, Ewen Southby-Tailyour, has in the past gone to great lengths to impress upon everybody that entrants are (for want of a better phrase) 'Self Certifying'.

There IS no control, there are no rules, no safety requirements, no inspections; there are only a few recommendations - one being third party insurance and another being a 500 mile non-stop singlehanded passage (even that is not checked). That is the whole point and the rationale for the Challenge. BTW, it is not that established - the first JC being in 2006.

Check out the JC Website.

Give Pantaenius a go. Very pagmatic people. Want to know your experience (and make the point its experience not certificates that they want to hear about). No problems with singlehanders or night sailing. That's why I'm with them. Never had to make a claim but they strike me as up front "non small print" type people. Not expensive either. worth a look - based in Plymouth so handy for the Jester start line!
