Will be bringing a Jenneau S34 back from St Helier in a couple of weeks. Two crew, we aren’t novices but haven’t done this trip before. Any tips please?

Obviously, check the tides, don’t get it wrong in the Alderney race. And don’t try that in poor weather, it cuts up pretty rough.

Aim to go though the Alderney race at slack tide. then it will be the best it can be on that day.

And save yourself a small fortune by timing your arrival at the Needles fairway, a free ride up the western Solent is available. Wave as you pass Yarmouth. Which, if it’s getting dark and you are tired, it a great 1st stop.

They don’t do bookings, but hardly ever turn anyone away.

Obviously I like them. I’m moored above the bridge, away from the hurly burly. They look after us residents just like visitors.

I don’t recall them ever doing that. But it could have been a covid thing.

I wouldn’t worry so much about getting slack tide in the race so much as making sure it’s still on the flood and you have wind and tide together. If conditions aren’t ideal then go west past Ortac.
