Investigation of slight irregularity in running of the engine revealed that the primary filter (Racor) was contaminated with a jelly like substance.
Dose anyone have any experience of such a phenomenon? Cause? Cure? I cannot find a mention of this sort of contamination in my Nigel Calder 'bible'.
Although we have bought fuel in a series of 3rd world countries in the past few years, this is best(?!) quality European, the last two fills being Cadiz and Portimao.
I assume that I will need to pump all the fuel out of the tank and discard it.
Any suggestions to mitigate such a prospect?

It is probably diesel bug. If you search the forums there is loads of information. Try also a search for cleaning the tank and on fuel polishing.
It's a common problem so there are lots of people that will help, but most of questions have already been asked and answered.

Been there, done that - if it's an orange-coloured jelly.

I discovered exactly the problem you describe- ours probably came from fuel in Gib.
Our tank is only accessable thro the fuel filler & engine supply / return lines so cleaning the tank is very difficult.
Following advice from the forum i dosed with a bug killer (Marine 16 in my case) & have been changing the filters every 10-15 hours. So long as i keep the revs down the engine runs OK & all the 'jelly' is taken out in the pre-filter. It's early days as i've only used 1/2 tank of fuel since end March, but i'm hoping that eventually i'll work the jelly through, though i fear i may eventually need to cut access holes in the tank.
If you get to Alemerimar there's a Brit who has some experience of tank cleaning.
Good luck.

John
