has one of these, and raves about it.

Not quite! We have a Sun Legende 41 which was the model that replaced the Sun Fizz 40 in the Jeanneau range.

We have friends with a Sun Fizz and they were partially the reason why we looked at the Sun Legende. We had been looking around for over 18 months at Westerly Oceanlords, Moodys even HRs and Rivals and hadn't seen anything that was worth the money being asked and then our friends showed us their new Sun Fizz, it was better than most of the others we had seen and half the price, it also had a traditional layout which we preferred. We then researched the market for a Sun Fizz and, since it was also a similar traditional layout but a bit newer the Sun Legende that replaced it.

The Sun Fizz was designed by Phillipe Briand and the original took place in the Ostar transatlantic race (UK- Newport, upwind all the way). The Sun Legende was designed by Doug Peterson and the original 'Legende' was a French One Ton Cupper and Admirals Cup team member, also won SORC down under in Ozland. These came from the era when it was possible to have a PROPER cruiser/racer, space and pace.

I think about 1000 Sun Fizz 40s were built, many for the charter market but there were 'owners' versions as well as the 10 berth charter ones. Early ones had a formica type interior that was a bit of an aquired taste (very orange I think!) but later ones (and all the Sun Legendes) were fitted out in proper teak. Engines were mostly Perkins 4108 around 40-50hp. Hulls were laid up with Kevlar reinforcement (bullet proof vest material), light but very stiff/tough.

Look at the back copies of Reviews from YBW, they roadtested both Sun Fizz and Sun Legendes and copies are available because I had them, on loan elsewhere at present!

Look also at the excellent Jeanneau Owners website for full specs and lots of pics see

Lousy pics plus our Sun Legende is a later version with a recessed stepped transom.

The Legende in the pic is flying a huge spinny and full main on a beam reach whilst probably logging +/- 9kts, about tickover for your Leopard beastie I know but very sprightly for a raggie in a moderate windspeed!

I had them drop the spinny so you can see.....

I really must make a note of where the PROPER pics are!

I used to own the lift keel version (charter layout) - sloop. Loved the boat, but couldn't sail it to it's best - reef the main early. There are ketch rigged versions around too.

Yes, galley was formica, orange, but we dealt with that by using Fablon (don't sneer - it was great result!). Eventually discovered that the strange shaped waste bin was really a baguette locker /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The sails were not brilliant, but when I replaced them the transformation was fantastic.

Problems I had -

- sticky rudder bearings - boatyard told me to use limescale remover - worked a treat (Portsmouth harbour). Also
- loose P Bracket - worth checking carefully at survey
- when I sold her, buyers survey said evidence of water ingress aroung some deck fittings - check carefully as deck is balsa cored.
- Engine 4108 down on compression (nothing to do with Jeanneau though!), parts easy to get, but engine has reputation for slight oil leaks - gaskets etc.

Generally, very well built. I had early '81 model. The later models are much nicer (teak).

Good luck

oh come on you can help yerself, no? Kick up the boats for sale icon above , advanced search, sailing boats, 1980 to 1984 , make = jeanneau size= 38- 42 feet...

The results show that a half decent one might be around 40 grand? in any event you need to peruse and use this info - even send it ahead to seller/broker once made an appointment perhaps.

Be aware of the condition of the seller (as well as boat) by filtering on how long the advert has changed with "adverts placed since" as if it's a new advert he may not like rubbish offers. If the boat has "plans" for the summer it's not in your favour - you want a seller who wants rid. OTOH you want a seller who is loving and caring of boat, dang...

37 grand then. Ok, 36 grand and a nude lady....
