January Sailing

Eponymous new year sailor and great video-maker

Fab stuff, Dylan! Thank you for continuing to add to your evocative archive.

I went out Christmas Eve after breaking up the ice on deck. Had an enforced land-based gap for family activities over the festive season, and the tides are wrong in Tollesbury this weekend, but planning to be out for a sail next weekend. The wildfowl and winter scenery are breathtaking and magnificent.

Besides, no such thing as cold weather, just poor clothing.

Really enjoyed that, very relaxing. I love my Trangia as well but haven't used it as a heater (yet), it will definitely be coming with me as a back up when I move on to the boat. Can I ask what video camera you have?:)

Went down to the boat this very morning (SWMBO said we must be bonkers) got out of the car to a biting NE wind, any thoughts of sailing soon dispelled, the pontoons were like a mini Himalayas and a 50mm crusting of icy snow over the boat ensured a hasty retreat to the pub...........

Launched my boat yesterday (funny, everybody else has taken theirs' out...) and whilst rowing my tender across the harbour to pick up my crew, I crunched to a halt. Thinking I'd run aground, I was surprised to see that I'd been stopped by a sheet of ice covering most of the harbour. This is a very, very rare occurence up here. I had to go around it- I genuinely couldn't row through it, and was worried about puncturing the tender anyway. Perhaps time to fit an ice-breaking bow to an Avon.

The sail itself was fantastic, the further outside the harbour we went the stronger and cleaner the wind was, so we got a bit carried away and forgot to turn round. By the time we got back to the mooring the sun had dropped below the horizon and the temperature plummeted- I could barely tie on the mooring line.
More of the same planned for tomorrow :)

Lovely video Dylan and lots of credit to you, not only for going sailing but for doing it "minimum boat" style. I sail through the winter but its racing, maybe 2 to 4 hours at a time and with a nice warm bar to go to afterwards. Bit soft by comparison.

Nicely done video as well. What sort of camera did you use and how did you do the editing?

cameras

the first bit was shot on a waterproof xacti CA9 - brilliant little camera for its size - it is really waterproof and is almost HD

the rest was shot on a sony HDR-HC9 - but would love to be able to buy a panasonic sd card camera - all t6hose tiny wheels and tapes hate the cold and damp

editing at home on premiere pro - lots of people try to edit on I-movie or the windows equivalent - but v hard to get good results with it

thnaks for watching them

Dylan

Dylan,

Fabulous. I was out sailing in Plymouth Sound on News Year's Day but I must admit that I returned to the shorepower hook up for the very cold nights......

Superb Dylan. Really motivated me that has. Boat Show today and on the boat next week methinks! Really like the visuals on that and a very good editing job too. Well done. Keep the round Britain one coming as well.
