I've seen some bonkers projects in PBO, but this one???

Just took a quick scan through the new PBO (May?) that arrived this morning. One of the projects describes fitting a grey water tank to catch sink waste from the heads for subsequent use to flush the toilet. I find it difficult to believe that this is not the customary April fool joke, but it seems to be serious.

How is this supposed to be useful? It is universally recognised that grey water is more difficult to cope with than black. It contains grease, scum, soap, hair and other detritus, all of which tend to drop out in the tank. Removing it is going to be a nightmare, particularly since the author does not seem to have included a hatch in his design. Flushing scummy water through the heads is highly likely to cause valve blockage. The author seems to think that doing this will eliminate toilet smells, suggesting that he has no experience of grey water tanks. The one beneath our camper smells considerably more than any toilet I have ever owned on a series of boats.

Recommendation - do not copy.

Get a canvas one for the non-toilet purposes. Should you ever mix them up and try to sit on it, you will swiftly discover your error.

You'd think that any PBO baby journo with half an ounce of cerebellum going spare would quietly use this outstanding resource on 'ere to check out some of his ( her? ) wilder fancies first, before bursting into print and displaying all the ignorance and naivety for which that sunlit office in Poole is now celebrated.

I must be the dumbo then. I have used a grey water tank to flush for 12 years now and have had none of the proposed problems. But them I'm evil too and have no calc build-up in the pipes.

Ill second that if you have done any plumbing at home particularly on a bog then comparing it with a sink taking tooth paste , saliva , nose pickings , Ladies hair and various brands of soap , conditioner and the like then its surprising how sparklingly clean a bog is

Have you ever slipped on deck and fallen holding a full bucket of number 2
I once had my bilges swimming with the stuff when the holding tank leaked and dropped the lot into one of my hulls . hell of a job to get rid of smell after cleaning out
Mind you some guys in the marina balance the pail precariously on their bikes and cycle to the loo to empty them . I would hate for anything to fall

if some people want to be ultra safe then get some doggy bags from the nearest pet shop or do it on the deck and then pooper scoop tying the bag in a knot and dumping it in the appropriate recycle refuse bin when you get to port
