I've bought a new boat

A very nice choice if i may say so !!!!!................................. are you sure that there are enough rocker switch,s under the raymarine ??........ (just thought i,d ask).

I reckon Henry's new charter venture will be called "Hookers".

Strapline: "Got an itch to scratch? Let me scratch it for you"

Well, I mean to say, the fishing rods, the luxury cabins. What on earth did you think I meant? :D

I'm not sure the fishing charter market is quite where we're at. I'm sizing the rod holders to see if they take anti missile chaff launchers for our more security conscious clients. The underwater lights will blind any would be scuba diving threats.

I had a rocket launcher, sorry passerelle, on my previous Phantom 42 so its one of the few bits of kit that won't take any learning.

Oddly the rockers under the chart plotter are pretty much standard fare on Princesses so nothing to learn there. In fact the general layout and way of going about things is very similar. It's just stuff associated with systems I've not had in the past.

I'm hoping that at 50 foot it isn't too different to the 42 (which is actually 45 feet long) in terms of where we can go. It looks bigger because of the increased freeboard and beam but on pure length there isn't that much in it. We will be trying our usual spots in preparation for the charter operation.

Henry :)

Good choice

Wow - looks fantastic!

Will watch out for you around South Devon should you pass this way during your travels.

Where are you planning to base the new venture and will you be up and running in time for the Olympics? I'd guess you'd be able to able to name your price around then...

Enjoy!!! :D

Looks stunning Henry, by the looks of the pics it's at swanwick, I was there today working, If she is there I'll pop over and take a look tomorrow.

Good luck with her I'm sure she will deliver all and more the 42 did.

Thanks for all the kind words. Although the purchase was relatively quick it wasn't without it's deliberation. The P50 is a big step up for a simple country boy like me and I had many a restless do I don't I moment. As we walked away from signing the papers we were happy and so I know we've made the right descision.

There is quite a lot of work ahead for the charter project both in terms of marketing and boat / crew preparation. I suspect the boat will be sorted sometime around the end of April, the marketing has started already and will be a work in progress for some time. We are using skills learned from our CCTV business which is a very tough nut to crack. I think the boating world will be a lot easier. I was doing some stuff yesterday with my IT man and we both looked at each other, scratched our heads and asked what we were missing. Whereas with the CCTV42 project every time you go to buy some virtual marketing parts someone has got in there before you in the boating world all the bits are still on the shelf!

I've got a bit of work to get myself up to speed qualification-wise. Unfortunately 15 years of boating doesn't count for anything, it's the right bits of paper you need so it's back to school!

Not sure about the Olympics, whilst I'm as happy as the next man to relieve someone of a fortune I'm not sure there will be quite the demand people expect. Whilst it would be a healthy 1st year bonus I'm looking to the long term and hoping to fine tune the initial idea.

Who knows?

We will be out and about in April around the Solent taking lots of images and doing our groundwork. So if you see a P50 with rod holders give us a wave or better still pop over and say hello :)

Henry

Congratulations on the no messing, swift purchase. I love 50 ft'ers, they are such great all rounders and imo they generally represent the best vfm for a fly planing boat. Think you might be pleasantly surprised in the ride and handling difference from the 42 though, I bet you can't wait to get her out there. Enjoy.

well done that country boy !
congratulations with your really nice boat,
and good luck with the chartering ! I'm following with interest as I am planning to do some myself, but from a slightly different angle / place.

Congratulations Henry

I was actually in the office at the time of your negotiations, I had a little chuckle to myself when you were pushing hard.

Hope you enjoy it and good luck with the chartering side.

Something I meant to ask about, it may need a seperate thread but I will try it on here frst:

The propellors on the boat are special high tech jobbies that are supposed to reduce fuel consumption by 50% and add 6 knots to the top speed. Ok I lied about the exact specs but presumably they do something to the greater good.

Any ideas ?

Henry :)

edited to say I'm almost expecting to see these on the F1 cars at Shanghai

I'm guessing but are those strips to protect from cavitation damage at the blade trailing edge when the pressure is highest ????
lovely boat by the way - really lovely.

Hmm, I'm not sure about cavitation damage. I've never seen any signs of that up to now on either the Fairline 42 or the Princess 42 just sold. The props were like new.

I was wondering if if was something like the Gurney flap on my race car spoiler?

Henry

just a guess;
this might give the same effect as "Cupping" on stern drive props

here is a brief explanation of cupping I found on the net:

Cupping is added to most propeller blades to improve the propeller's bite on the water and decrease slippage. It is most commonly seen on the trailing edge of the blade. Usually the effect of cupping makes the prop perform like a higher pitch propeller, but it does enhance your thrust as well. In addition, cup reduces a prop's tendancy to ventilate or slip. Custom prop builders often use aggressive degrees of cupping to fix slippage problems on large diameter, low pitch props on certain boating applications

many years ago on a 21ft boat, after replacing the orriginal non cupped prop, by a new, cupped version (same size)
there was a well notice-able improvement of performance (speed and acceleration)

i'm no expert though

Another complete stab in the dark but are those strips weights to allow perfect balancing of each prop blade in order to reduce vibration in the same way as weights are added to car wheels for balancing purposes? Probably complete bollox
