Before the engine people had boats with a mast and could hang sails off the rigging, these were called YACHTS.

Then came along the MOTOR boat.

Let's keep focused.

Docking = Marina berth or pontoon

In one of his books, Peter Heaton defined "yacht" as "a boat, when described to somebody who will never see it"

So you think of my little Leisure 17 as a "yacht" do you? think "sailing boat" is a bit more appropriate. I don't like the shortened version of that.

In the very distant past, when I raced, all sailing boats were refered to as yachts under the IYRU (is that still a thing?) rules, even Oppies.
Let's have a bit of thread drift and slag off the yanks. Why are people now hired, like wallpaper strippers, rather than employed?

No they aren't. They don't deserve the cachet that the word carries !

We are British Corinthian amateur sailors .

We sail yachts and we go yachting.

We berth a boat in a marina and moor a yacht on a mooring.

Anybody who violates this is on for a damn good thrashing.

I would never use the word "yacht" to describe my boat at work - my boss would think I'm paid far too much!

I am happy with ‘sailing boat’ or in some contexts ‘yacht’, but never the ghastly ‘sailboat’. Although all boat used for pleasure can be called yachts, I feel a nagging disappointment when someone refers me to a supposed yacht only to find that are referring to an inverted steam iron.

If I ever am drawn to call my ‘boat’ a sailboat you have my permission to affix a sign on the heads door labelling it the ‘bathroom’.
