It\'s a subtle thing...

...knowing when things are tilting one way or the other but of late there have been a few too many biscuits in the suggestive digestive packet.

This is, in point of fact, a boating forum and I'd just like to ever so politely remind everyone that nudge, nudge, wink, wink seaside postcard posts are not really what this place is about.

Can I also add to the list of things I'd like to see toned down a little the multiplicity of ways in which people are seeking to use profanity without spelling it out in full. I suspect it is completely possible to communicate the feeling of a post without resorting to asterisk fillings in obvious sandwiches or a poor man's equivalent of cockney rhyming slang.

Pythonesque moan over.

I`ve never seen anything on this site that I`ve not read from Jeremy Clarkson or most other Times columnists. If you are that easily offended don`t read the adolescent girls mags my granddaughter buys ! Most of their advice wouldn`t have been printed in "Top Shelf" mags a few years back. (and don`t buy any tabloids - you will have a heart attack.

Good point

You pretty much know what you get on the tin with Jeremy Clarkson. Since a slightly alarming experience trying to act as benovent uncle to young nieces in newsagent am beginning to realise what you get inside the wrapper of a teen mag aimed at girls.

What people should get on the tin here is largely stuff about and around motorboats. Just as Clarkson and teen editors exercise their editorial choice over that so am I in this matter.

Not sure because other people do things we have to here?

Not making a big deal about this or prodding a finger in any specific direction, just a gentle reminder to keep things on an even keel.

Re: It\'s a subtle thing...

Profanity of the go-forth-and-multiply variety when used constantly both loses it's effect and is numbingly boring. On the other hand, used with deftness and at the appropriate moment there is no better word, and the world needs a word to use when it drops a brick on its foot.

We should have got beyond the point the point where "that word" needs to be banned for its own sake.

On a different subject I do think that there are too many posts which seem to exist only for the gratification of the poster, like it's some kind of competition to see who posts the most. "Now what can I think of to post today..." I find that a whole lot more irritating than the occasional four letter expletive.

Re: It\'s a subtle thing...

aw, i quite like people making new posts. Not seen any hideously rude ones of late.

AND i like the little seaside postcards of wot we did on our day out. Frexample, i came out of the medina river yesterday and the kids launched an unprovoked water pistol attack on a sailing boat, and he went utterly raving bonkers BUT he was exceeeding the 6 knot speed limit, so i spose that's okay. Or shouldn't i mention this at all?

Nearly did something I've hardly ever done since I was in nappies >>

See Here but only if you have a sense of humour and are not easily offended.

I'm away back to read it again!

Re: Good point

I find some of the posters here are not only extreemly knowledgable in a great many areas, but wittier and funnier than most of the junk on TV. I can often laugh out loud and SWMBO is a bit tired of me calling her to "come & read this". I always look forward to opening the forum - thank you ladies and gentlemen - the cheapest and best entertainment on the net - keep it coming !

Re: Good point, The Guvnor

I concur; I thought I was going potty - doing precisely what you do, fortunately SWMBO laughs also.

It has for long been a sadness for me that we have to resort to derivations of anglo saxon descriptions of bodily functions whe expressing dissatisfaction or frustration. Our Victorian forbears and other languages have (possibly) less offensive phrases to voice their sentiments.

Might I start a campaing to ditch the **expletive** and substitute a well chosen - or even fabricated expression. the advantage is that 'we' will have to apply some mind power in construction; The English language has only a limited number of expletives, but the scope for epithets is limitless, and being perhaps less explicit in their application may even afford some amusement to the reader rather than revulsion.

SO to those who continue to use disguised or otherwise expletives in their posts "I say NO. NO, go forth you misbegotten fellow, MAY your spars suffer terminal corrosion, AND your hull delaminate before the end of the season".

Much better than **expletive** off, you **expletive**.

We do have derogative expressions in currrent usage- TB liar, Two Jags, ? bully boy Blunkett? all is needed now is a bit of invention to extend the list.

Personally I derive more pleasure in getting feedback (hopefully positive) from my posts either because the information has been of use, or has caused some amusement.

What about it chaps, and chapesses?

I'm off to consult my OED, Brewer's and the like.

Re: A novel idea

Seeing as the forums are getting a bit stagnant of late......obviously IMHO,, before anyone starts, how about closing the whole shooting match for a couple of weeks and revamping the lot. Also the prolific posters of poo could be limited to one post every 2 hours. Yes I know its not popular, but then again niether are taxes but we all have to paqy them!
