Hi all, just checking that this engine is indeed the one I think it is. I was told its a merc OM352 marine 6 cylinder 120HP deisel engine.
I manually pumped out almost 5 gallons of engine oil this afternoon to drain the system which seems a lot However it may have been overfilled previously or sea water may raised the fluid levels to 5 gallon, its a lot of oil !!!.

Would anyone know what oil rating would go in there in terms of viscosity etc, synthetic or not......

There are two what appear to be oil filler caps on her, on on top of the rocker cover as one would expect and one directly filling into the gearing wheels that run the fuel pump on the front right hand side....are both these to be filled with engine oil or are they seperate systems ? They can be seen on the photos. These engines were put into lots of different vehicles so the twin filler caps could simply be to allow easy oil filling when acces to the rocker cover cap was awkward to reach.

Lastly I took some shots of the Gbox too...would anyone know what Gbox that is? I am going to drain that out too but do not know if its the same oil as the engine OR if theres a drain plug to drain it out.

As you are probably gathering I know nothing whatsoever about this engine but a near sinking really galvanises ones quest for knowledge LOL.

Regards Alan

If my memory serves me right, the injecters do look like Merc.
Either of the oil filler caps can be used to refill the oil, check for level marks on the dipstick,(lower and upper level indicaters)
On the top of the gearbox in your pic there is a hex nut visible, if you unscrew this it will probably have a dipstick rod attached to it, you may be able to tell if it is engine oil, ATF (automatic transmission fluid) or Hypoid oil in there.
ATF is usually red, Hypoid smells like gas (Stinks) and is much thicker, and you will know by now what engine oil looks and feels like.
Dont know what make the box is, but there should be an oil drain plug on the underside or aft end low down, but I would imaging the underside.
Hope this helps.

An agricultural engineer might be your best bet for detail, the OM352 was used in a lot of Fordson tractors and the Unimog all-terrain vehicle.
Here is one used for a water pump:

The amount of oil seems high. A quick Google says the capacity should be 14.5 litres, just over 3 gallons.
I wouldn't worry about specifics of the oil viscosity, the cheapest 10-50 you can get hold of. For an older engine a mineral oil would be more sutiable than a synthetic which will have more detergents in it.
I don't recognise the gearbox but C_W has it right.

The gearbox is a PRM, they are very good gearboxes. They usually use pretty much the same mineral oil as the engine. If you google for Newage Prm they have a website with plenty of imformation. Think this will be either a 302 or 402 model.

we had om 314 x 2 ( the 4 cyl version in the same engine family) these came with 2 fillers, did not matter which was used.
the one over the gear had a mesh to remove oil from blow by .

just a point about the oil filter, it came in 2 types, full flow and bypass.

Bypass type requirement could be recognised by the small hole about 2mm from recollection in the securing bolt, for the oil flow, along with a stainless washable mesh outside the canister filter. little oil is lost on taking the bowl off as there is a good up stand inside.

Fuel filter was a cleanable compressed felt, along with a nylon washable pre filter, under the injection pump.

all parts for the basic engine & service items from MB truck dealers

on picture 12 of the injection pump, the upper small cap bolt adjusts the idle speed, (remove the cap)the lower one adjusts the governor, for hunting etc, don't unless you really have too.

oil

we used 20/50, but that was the 70s 80s.be advised by MB service
