Humm, can you still sail up 'Whitewall Creek' probably to the Petrol filling station, moor up and walk the short distance from there ? anymore ?
Pie Rat's Cave is indeed on the up, I agree. But not so good perhaps if you're a visitor on a boat, hard to get to. I guess you can bike it from Upnor which is an option. So long as you survive that roundabout....
There is a footpath from Upper Upnor that is almost a straight line to the roundabout at the end of the Medway Tunnel. I used to walk this path on a regular basis and it will only take about 15 minutes, so may be not worth getting the bike out. Pirates Cave is about 100m from the roundabout.
Pirates Cave is a good choice, as the OP said only a short walk from the clubs at Upnor or a....
Your definition of "short" obviously differs from mine! I certainly would not fancy walking from Upnor carrying a few litres of anti-fouling!

You can also cross the road at a controlled crossing so no issues with the roundabout. I have walked from Morrisons in Strood to Medway Yacht Club with a backpack full of shopping on a few occasions, not a bad walk.
