Is the proposed Oban Marina a good idea?

Of course you are promoting it, in contributions to three threads on here, the first of which was directly soliciting support for the proposal. If you want to help them it is not enough just to say you like it, you need to say why, and it is better if your reasons are persuasive. The Planners need to read all submissions and they are likely to take account of well argued cases, they do count numbers for and against but that is not all there is to it.

FFS Quandary. You are reading far too much into this. The council have made available the means for any interested person to make a comment in support or against the proposal. Some "ill informed" people have made comments and because they don't fit your astute view of the planning process you imply that they are perhaps not worth making.

I am currently involved in organising a charity sailing event to circumnavigate Scotland and the Shetlands using the Caledonian Canal.

How do you propose to CIRCUMNAVIGATE Scotland using the Caledonian Canal?

Well basically the same way that others sail round Britain but miss out a big lump off the top, I'll be sailing around Scotland but missing a bit off the bottom:)
I know it's not strictly a 'circumnavigation', can you forgive me?

Well, OK, I'm being pedantic, but to my mind "circumnavigate" means to go all the way round. I expect that in the forthcoming athletics bonanza, people would be quite upset if some of the competitors chose to take shortcuts. Why not just say that your going to circumnavigate the north of Scotland?

From a visiting yachtsman's point of view.....

It would have been nice to visit Oban by boat, go ashore, have a shower, cuppa tea and cake in the teashop on the front, visit the distillery, head off to the butcher for a stack of fresh meat, take that and the bottles of whisky back to the boat, set off again for a big shop, then go off to Kerrera for the night...(preferably without having to pay for drinks on one side of the patio and food on the other).

+1
A walk-ashore pontoon, with no overnight berthing, would be attractive for visiting yachtsmen. Only way of making it suitable for longterm berthing would be a stone breakwater.
Simply my opinion...

As I live in Scotland on the east coast, you west coast luvvies had loads of facilities, however like Webby I see nothing wrong with providing proper marina infrastructure, after all "build it and they will come".

As for the cost discussion, I am presently doing a round britain trip, so far have only stopped at three marinas (after all I only started last week)

Lymington Berthing, two meals, couple or three pints, bacon rolls in the morning, no change from £100
Portland, the same £100 but without the bacon rolls

Torquay bit less mainly due to MDL freedom berthing and Wetherspoons but still £30 a night

proper facilities in Oban and more on the east coast will encourage more people to do this, and if the Solent Sailing schools get wind of it then I guess there will be more,

lastly I am not an Independence supporter but to judge from the negative thoughts on anything scottish from scots (except webby who promised me a pint in Oban)
then what chance do we have if Independance goes ahead.

Scotland will need every penny it can raise (if only to pay for ecks international travel costs)
