Is removing/refitting injectors not for the faint hearted?

Just wondering whether the removal and refitting of the injectors on a Yanmar 3GM30 is something that is easily managed?

I would like to get them pop-tested and a local diesel engineer will happily do them for few £'s if I can get them to him.

Anybody done this job recently/at all and can offer some words of advice/wisdom?

Thanks

If they are stuck after the retaining bolts are removed, they can sometimes be dislodged by turning the engine over on the starter

I had the one on my 11GM10 done last winter. It was stuck in the head so fast I had to have it pressed out, the doing of which broke the pre-combustion chamber. I'd had a FW drip onto the head for three years which contributed to the problems. It's a good idea to do this regularly and the key is the needle vale in the injector body(I did the one on my previous engine, a MD1b when I got the boat and five years later; THAT injector came out fine). You can also get the injectors calibrated to the pump which is a good idea when you have a three cylinder engine.

It's quite possible that the diesel engineer might not have a test adapter for a Yanmar, suggest you check if you haven't already. The other advice to leave alone unless you're certain there is a problem is a good one. The injection system is one of the more reliable elements of a diesel installation.

That sounds pretty dangerous. If you must do it that way, slacken the nuts, but don't take them off completely. The idea of an injector flying round.......

Apparently, taking them off a warm engine is best.

I had a puller made for this after all other efforts failed. Lovely piece of kit. If you do have problems shifting them as I did on my 1GM10, I could lend you said puller if you cover the postage

When you put them back in make sure you use new washers and if there's a cupped washer it has a right way of going in.Check with the workshop manual.

Easy - have them calibrated and reset by a diesel injector specialist near you and when replacing either use new or re-annealed copper washers.

Diesel specialists are not common, ask in an HGV workshop for who they use, sometimes you can even get it done for free...

Thanks for the responses thus far............clearly split between "YES- go for it" and "leave well alone" !!

The primary reason for thinking about doing it, is the engine is lumpy at tick-over. I have adjusted the rate at t/over to the recommended revs, but I'm still not happy .
Apart from that it runs very well and starts OK?

Hi. I am currently trying to remove a rusted injector from my 1GM10.
Is there a chance I can borrow your puller? Happy to cover the postage costs.
