Talking to Guy in the Pub last night who said that there is an electronic gadget and related programme available that enables a Lap top to operate as a TV. Anybody know if this is correct or was he ace numero uno wind up merchant.

Yes it is true BUT you still need to plug an aerial into the small box TV unit that links into your USB port. I have gone for a small 12v colour TV instead as I find I don't use the hauppage unit I bought, it is just a mess of trailing wires.

TV cards work well in many laptops. Things to look out for:

Reception from a typical portable antennae is hit and miss. It's one thing having an aerial on top of the house chimney. The aerial you can put on a boat is limited, and the boats moves. So expect something less than ideal.

Many laptops don't have screen 'refresh' rates at anything near what you'd expect of of a decent 'telly'. If you have an old laptop, you'll have to live with it. If you're buying a new laptop, ask a few questions first...mainly, does the screen provide DVD film capability. If they say the screen is suitable for DVD films, it will handle TV. Don't buckle to sales pressure, make sure they put it in writing if you want a laptop to watch TV on.

<font color=blue>TV Cards do not work that well with PCs as I have discovered to my cost, aerial, refresh rate and other factors being involved. Far better to invest in a cheapo stand alone portable TV.

I know (becaue it came with my PC) that there is a card with software that makes your PC receiving TV channels. So, I cannot think why this could not apply to laptops. For more accurate info however may I suggest that is best to go to PCWORLD and ask the question.
