Re: Is It Me? NB

Then you have my greatest sympathy. Its early days with your Range but the pain will come! Our 2001 4.6 suffered so many problems in its first 12 months we got shot of it. And its total lack of reliability is one of the reasons its depreciation is so high, even here in Oz. I remember one of the UK motoring programmes, Top Gear or something similar, which took two RRs on test - so they could carry on when the first broke down! A friend in the UK has just had his 17 month old diesel Freelander replaced no charge because of the catalogue of problems the first experienced. Still, says something for LRs customer service.

Incidentally, I assume you realise that military Landrovers were built to a substantially different spec. to the 'public' ones. Even the chassis's were different.

Re: Is It Me? NB

I bought a new Top of the range Freelander last year, ~Picked it up on a Saturday morning, 2 days later on the Monday on way to work it broke down on the motorway, Stuck there for 2 hours waiting for LR assistance to come out. Not the greatest start.

4 months later the clutch broke as i drove in to my street. LR told me it was down to the way i drove it. Bollock i said, i have a van bought new, now 8yrs old have done over 200 000miles, and still on the origional clutch. So stick that in you pipe and smoke it, LR.
Anyway, With it breaking down 3 times, the central locking system replaced twice, Electric windows repaired twice, the side steps falling of once, and other stuff. I got shot of it, Recently. And now i am a lot happier

Re: Is It Me? NB

I hate to contiune this debate, but all the ones I have had have been ok, my brother runs the Discovery Commerical and does over 35k a year and the last 3 have never given him any problems. Hes got a new one waiting at the dealer.

I do accept that you need a good local dealer, there is a dealer within 1 mile of where i work, I would never take my car there. The dealer I use is 15 miles from home in the wrong direction to work, but they are the best.

I run my 2001 Diesel Range Rover up to about 60,000 and the only time it was towed back to the dealer was when I hit a pheasant on the Clapham by-pass going to the boat.

The Freelanders I am not such a big fan of, my wifes is ok but it doesn't really do anything. Her Discovery was a very good car and I liked it.

I know we can debate this for ever because with LandRover you either love them or hate them.

Re: new merc

well, not sure bout landrovers, bit too bricklike on motorways for me.

Anyway i have just today got a new e55 estate which has lots of space but is slighlty quicker than the ferrari 456, very wooshy indeed, but nice q-car all debadged so loks like an e200 (apart the 4 exhaust pipes i suppose)

Anyone got any idea how to dim the video in the centre console on one of these COMAND merc things? the poxy manual is on a dvd.

Oh, it also has a thing where it opens the door if you even just have the key in your pocket, no need to hold it or use the ignition, jump in press a button and engine starts, well worth 1700 quid or whatever, altho you do spend 5 minutes at the other end wondering where the blimmin key has gone, and you needem to lock the car. So, bit pointles i spose.

Maybe the answer for alistair is to go out and buy summink expensive?

Re: new merc

Oh, right i'll nip out right now.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

We have a Merc S320 with the keything you are talkiing about, Its called Keyless Entry, And i think its great.. I just wonder what Plod would think if we were stopped and they looked in to find the engine running and no keys in the ignition?

On our video display, there is a button to switch the display Only on or off. I don't think we have a dimmer, apart from when the lights are switched on.

Which is another thing, ever bloody thing is automatic, You don't need to switch the lights on, You don't even need to switch the wipers on, Its all automatic.

So can you recommend the 456,, I may need to rush out and buy one, right now./forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

Re: new merc

Re Range Rovers & new mercs.
Had both of these first Range Rover 1993 nothing but trouble it would be easier to say what did not break it practical fell to bits. tried the new model 4.6hse 1n 2000, plagued with electrical problems & needed a petrol bowser to tow behind.
As for Merc's had loads of them never had a problem with any of them so reliable.
Last one was E class 1998. But the new CLK my partner bought for his wife & his
new S class have been plagued with electrical problems, he's had mercs for years & swears he will never buy another one. As for me I defected to Grand Cherokee Jeeps they've got all the toys I m on my second one now. First one did 130k no
problems at all & I offroad them. Present one coming up for 90k also no problems & never gets stuck,
My views stuff range rovers & new mercs .........buy a jeep
ps......Martin Im just across the pond from you Costa blanca, good luck

Cheeky g*t! ( and forget the greatest respect!) I have been and still am a land Rover / Range Rover owner! with the greatest respect you want to be careful making assumptions

In the past I have owned one SWB Land Rover V8 and currently own two 15 year old V8 range rovers that i would never sell and have never let me down I had one mid shape Range Rover and now also have a brand new one which ive had for a fair while. I also am involved in an association in the States which brings me into contact with owners of numerous 4x4 makes and when the going gets tough out in the wilderness the Land Rover / Range rovers come to the front always, as proven in many tests carried out by various publications and associations over there.

I do offroad treks in the States and have been part of a dakar rally team that succesfully completed in a car based on a 9 year old range rover! so with the greatest respect I have a fair bit of knowledge of the cars and and what they can do!

80% of the worlds population that have no road or transport connections the first car they ever see is a Land Rover not a japanese wannabe or a tight a****d german piece of pose.

And like I say theres the the issue of sheer class- that needs no defending its there and always has been.

Please get real with the Iraq, central Africa comments since the war started its looked like a Land Rover convention over there! But yes you are correct on some of the land rovers alterations were made depending on its final use but it definitly wasnt a case of the whole chassis being altered on all military Land Rovers! In many cases the military used the old SWB 2 1/4 straight out of the box changing only elements on the brakes and including a raised air inlet funnel and changing the voltage to accomodate 24v. The lightweights , 109's and series 3 were often not changed at all other than wheels and tyres and again to accomodate 24V.

But you are right the Government are deciding to change and order Landcruisers for the really tricky bits!

Well Im bored of this thread now so Im off to pastures new.

Now I may have never owned a British made 4x4 but I feel that Land Rover (Defender etc) and the new breed of Disco (why did they call it that/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif) and FreeLoader, and even Range Rover aare two different animals. Bit like calling your little Moggy and a Tiger both Cats. IMHO of course.

Re: ooh and 456

where's the button then? I can't find the sodding thing.

Yes, 456 highly recommended for vastly highspeed travel under all conditions - people see ferrari whizzing up and pull over so they can have a look. Whereas merc? soddim! Other than that, if you have a merc, you'll have a very bad time with a ferrari as a daily car, cos the aircon, seats, lights well, everything is a bit naff or dodgy or flimsy. Bit like an old zephyr, which is what i use to call it when ringing up the nice dealer, and i got very expert at driving the thing into transporter lorries, which i always made sure were arranged at interesting locations like just along the way outside the dole office. If you don't use it every day, then after 2 weeks something will have gone wrong, or the battery wil be flat, hence get the AA out or the nice dealer again, hence nobosy does many miles innem. Also, above bout 130 your ears bleed as the framless windows get sucked outwards. If it rains the heater can't clear the screen , so you open the window and your legs get wet cos no gutters - which make the car look sexy. Oh, also they depreciate like a stone. Secondhand one mite be ok. Need a red one i think, and black interior might be the most durable.

From what I gather and IMHO they all started with the same premise a tough go anyhwere anytime vehicle, the defender has stayed exactly to that remit whilst the discovery and range rover have developed into technological luxury cars but I think ultimatly they are all still cats just perhaps some more house cats others more farm cats- they can all do what each other can do but some prefer not to!

The freelander is possibly the odd one out as it was designed primarily to take some of the small 4x4 market from the RAV etc itas based on the maestro van. But again they have made it tough and useable off road but it is much more a 'car' and i dont mean that ina bad way just that perhaps that it is this model that is different from the others in some ways.

And all this squabbling came about because Dom complained about his V230 - WHICH IS A VAN !!!!! It was even suggested he should buy a Honda instead - they don't even sell VANS in the UK /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif.

Re: Girls Unite!

I only look in here very occasionally and now I know why looking at this spat. I don't know where you're coming from allistairr but I can see no rudeness, no personal attacks in OzGirls posts but standards on this forum appear to have sunk to the level where it is OK to refer to a lady contributor as 'a cheeky git' Shame on you Kevin - go and sit in the louts corner!

Or perhaps it counts as rudeness if a lady has the timerity to challenge some male utterance .......particularly on any subject mechanical. Blokes eh!

ps don't know much about LRs but my father used to race a highly modified supercharged (yes, supercharged!) V8 lightweight. It was never road legal though.

Re: Girls Unite!

Please, as far as I`m concerned, you are welcome anytime, it`s your choice. Now then, actually Kevin was responding to a rather rude post, (if you can`t see it, sorry others could) but I dont think it really is much of a problem, do you? I also dont think the Forum has sunk to any levels not previously charted either, do you? I also think Ozgirl needs no help in defending herself as she does so admirably. Do you?

By the way, supercharging V8`s is nothing new nor unusual, the americans have been doing it for at least 50 years.

All this is IMHO as is usual here.

Excuse me.....!!

Mr Scott

1) Isn't it more than just a touch hypocritical to tut me for 'defending' Ozgirl while youre wading in doing the self-same trhing on behalf of Kevin?

2) Nope! Still cant see it. Ozgirls 'youre talking garbage' (said with the greatest of respect) was a more than reasonable response to Kevins 'less rubbish talk' It was he (and only he) that personalised the debate by calling names when it was clear that other posters supported Ozgirls view. If the rudeness was so clear to you (and the nameless others you cite) perhaps you could highlight examples for me. You know what difficulties we girls have in understanding complex issues like these.

3) Dont know what the yanks were doing but I can assure you that a supercharged V8 Lightweight LandRover was pretty unique in our part of the world 25 years ago. Dad did all the engineering work himself and won competition after competition. Come to think of it I have never seen a similar vehicle since - but doubtless you have :)

OZGIRL Cant believe I'm arguing at this prosaic level but I'm away from home and with a gap between assignments. Apologies for having interfered but its a common cause. Women will even be asking for the vote next! I'll PM you

Woe Is me.....my honour, yes my honour, as a gentleman has been heartlessly and quite franlky cruelly attacked and brought into question by a poster. My heart sank when i read that my response was rude because my response was to a lady. I never mentioned, intimated or cared what sex the person was or whether they may know more or less about things of this nature than I do, other people seem to have raised this 'female' point!!!!! Im saddened me to the pit of my stomach that an argument between adults in 2004 is still brought back to this level!

I feel I need to clarify here and now and stated as a point of fact Im quite happy to call anybody male, female and indeed animal a cheeky git if i think they deserve it ( not sure how an animal can be a cheeky git but I had a hamster once with a real bad attitude, though to his defence i think his was more a case of being sarcastic) and will do so whether it be face to face (including picture messaging), phone, email, letter, text and forums, all of which are to me acceptable mediums with which to do so. please note i have not included fax as mine isnt working properly and any message i may send including 'cheeky git' wouldnt be legible so it would just be a waste of money.

I must now go sit in a dark corner and heal the psychological wounds that have been cruelly inflicted upon my very soul.

My Father owned countless Range Rovers circa 1975 - 95 V8`s all and cracking vehicles they certainly were. That good I set myself a target very early on to try and own a LR one day. Couldn't afford Range Rover in 2001 as I was also in the throws of buying first boat (225WE) so purchased first Discovery ES with all the trimmings, particularly to tow boat, had tele's, sound system the lot fitted. Now 3 yars old can honestly say 3 things:
1 Tows brilliantly,
2. Goes anywhere.
3. Is falling to bits so badly you can't stand to tow anything or go anywhere in it.
I am now changing car and have unfortunately heard so many bad stories from current owners, particularly around the Marinas and unfortunately no good stories. Followed one down the A34 at high speed recently (in the wifes 230 CLK Compress of course, as the Disco can't do "High speed") and can't tell if it was the Driver but kept well back as it seemed as skittish as hell, especially under light braking.
So I really can't justify the cost and have to admit to ordering the Lexus RX300SE although I would have loved to have ordered a Range Rover, in truth. Such a shame. Paul

Re: Excuse me.....!!

Mr. Scott, was my father, I`m just Colin!
Please lets not play the patronising "little girl" card! "we girls have difficulty understanding complex issues" Horse manure! Yes I have seen quite a few supercharged Rover (Nee Buick) V8`s, having built a few, but admittedly only one lighweight LR. I thought Ozgirls remarks were alittle rude, but it doesn`t matter what gender the person was who said it, rude is rude.
I too am away from home, but not between assignments.
I was not defending Kevins stance, but the forum in general, which is what your original post was berating! You also seem to want, from your original post, to pit man against woman on the forum, we dont tend to do that here, we are all just påosters, male and female alike.
Let us part in a friendly manner, 25 years ago supercharging in UK was in it`s infancy in leisure vehicles! Would have loved to see that LR then, a fire breather no doubt! Your father would be an interesting man to meet.
Bye!

Re: Excuse me.....!!

Colin

I'm bored with this game so will just write Kevin off as a bounder and say no more. I'm sure his wounds will heal eventually.

If supercharging was in its infancy 25 years ago in the UK, you can imagine the awe in which my fathers racer was held in the very rural part of the ROI where we live. He was and still is, a truely talented engineer and has built machines since that defy description. Thankfully, he has never turned his hand to anything intended to fly but he keeps offering to install some decent machinery in the boat instead of the 'weedy' Cummins we have there! I could see us ending up with at least 1000hp each side!!

Pax........ Siobhan
