Yep , delighted. I bought from new and am very happy thank you. The boat's an absolute dream and I got first class service from the agency. I can't comment on the after sales service as yet , as the boat is only weeks old.

Very satisfied with the boat (secondhand) -everything I wanted and more. Initially the broker's service seemed good but once the deal had been done, it fell off and, for instance, it took almost a year to get a cradle out of them that had been included in the particualrs of the boat.

Re: Is everybody happy with the spouse they married?

There's some nice ones on a G reg. on the the market at the moment - might trade up if I can get 0% finance - otherwise get an MOT and slap another years tax on the old girl - had her waxoyled last month so that should keep the rust off for a while, upholstry just showing signs of getting a bit saggy - just on the seat mainly but can't grumble about the economy.

Very happy with the new boat - maybe should be 10' bigger. Aftersales has been good - had a couple of things looked at (saloon table wasn't screwed down properly and leaking toe-rail). Both times the agent has come to the boat and done the work foc as you'd expect. Could have been quickier but the job got professionally done.

I can't agree that all is rosey down here.

I bought last year without Chief Mate and immediately was advised that the toilet was too small and in the wrong place! Also seating too narrow. The boat is on its side in anything above F4 and I'm running up the white flag!

I'm going up by 5ft in length and considerably more beam - probably sell the house!!

Answer here is test sail; read reports; and bring along Chief Mate.

PLease name the boats--but not the spouses--and the brokers too. Couldn't agree more with the comments about the brokers being none too helpful once the deed is done. Mine on the Orwell tried to wriggle out of some work agreed to saying it was not reccomended in the survey. Always put everything in writing. Dead chuffed with the boat though! A Sigma 33.

Yep! Bought new. Been in the water since Easter - a few minor teething problems which were quickly and efficiently sorted out. Would I change it for something a) bigger b) heavier c) sexier d) faster? No, don't think so!

Might just change the sailing area to the Med. though.

rbrooks,

Thanks for making me chuckle, your expression 'the broker was a tit' was a corker, it could only be surpassed by use of the word 'shite' (as in 'the broker was shite') but that's possibly because I'm from the North East.

Sorry to clutter up the forum with my mindless observtions, but referring to a broker as a 'complete twat' is nearly as good as rbrooks (see previous thread) who chose the word 'tit' instead.
Either way, thank you both for making me laugh.

Re: What type?

The same thought struck me – No one said what type of boat they bought.

My preference is for Motor-Sailers, and after much pondering over designs and layouts and a lot of disappointment on the condition and poor layout of many I looked at, I saw a Colvic Countess for sale. They are mainly built for home completion and the Guy that completed this one had done an excellent job. The rigging was all sized up a level and his woodwork, electrical and mechanical fitting was excellent.

I've had the boat for just over a year now. The only problems / dislikes that I've found are small access covers on large under bunk stowage areas, so can’t get an inflatable in – this has now been rectified, and silly non locking catches on cupboards so they bang open in a humpy sea.

The Broker (Springtide Marine, Gosport) did a competent job, though, lets face it, they don’t have to do that much in most cases.

a few years ago, having never owned a boat before, I decided that I wanted one.
I flew out to Maine (from MIchigan) and spent the day at the Hinckley boat yard
(http://www.thehinckleyco.com). The salesman spent the day going over everything that I wanted. At the end of the day, the salesman said that it was obvious that I really didn't know enough about sailboats to have one built. He tactfully suggested that I buy a used one first and learn what I want and don't want. I disagreed. I flew home that evening, Thought it over and finally came to agree and bought a used Hinckley, a 49 ft center cockpit ketch. I love this boat, and could not be happier with it.

The Hinckley company is a first class operation. The original salesman, John Correa, lost a new boat sale, because he was looking out for my interest over looking out for his. The used boat salesman, Bob Pooler, is just as great. When I am at the Hinckley dock in Southwest Harbor, Maine, he always stops by to see if everything is fine. When i'm home (Michigan, usa), and send an email quesetion, I receive an answer immediately.

I took delivery in sept 2000 and my british captain and crew and myself sailed her to Miami where she spent the winter. This boat handled very well in the ocean and we saw 12 ft seas and 50kt winds.

A different captain, crew and myself sailed her back from Miami to Maine in the spring of 2001.

Am I happy? absolutely!! Did I have any idea how much it costs to maintain a boat? NO!!

the joke about standing in the shower tearing up hundred dollar bills just doesn't reflect the magnitude of expenses.

Still, I wouldn't change a thing.

Good to see so many happy new owners - but there must be others who can speak from the other side - 'new' boats that did not come up to scratch - and not just from useless brokers!

Judging by the number of boats on the market, there are an awful lot of us wanting to change - it would be interesting to know why? Ok - changing to something a bit bigger/faster/newer/ just won the Lottery/Pooles, Rich aunty died etc. Thats one thing.

Lets hear some of the disaster stories - so that we can all learn to avoid expensive mistakes!
