Is anybody going to Cannes?

I don't think thre is a proper definition of qualified ;) Comes down to no cash, no splash!

ODYSSEY
Out of interest how do you qualify somebody for their ability to buy a 40m yacht? If a Russian or Chinese guy you’ve never seen walks on to your super yacht and demands a tour what do you do?

Nine times out of ten they will be with their own broker (very common in the large yacht sector) if they are not and Cannes has more walk ups than other shows, then we will sit them down with one of our brokers, understand their needs, what they are interested in and ultimately their budget.

It’s actually easier to qualify in this sector than the sub 24 metres.

More often than not we will show them the yacht and they will turn out to be flakes. The tyre kickers are usually too nervous / shy to go further than the first question so they self qualify !

A simple but polite refusal is all thats required and both parties are happy. We will often give a cap or something instead.

Owners want to sell their yacht and only want buyers on board. A bit like your house. You don’t want it to be an open house especially if it’s based on your house and as personal as your house.

I have never met a disgruntled / offended visitor yet who has been refused boarding. There’s no need to be rude and we never are.

I am always sceptical of true qualification ability in the boat market.

I went to princess with my 3 year old daughter on day. I was in jeans and wanted to look at a princess 64. It was clear sir could not
afford it.

It was the final look before signing the contract across the road ( Solent place where the motor yacht show is held) for a new s65.

Princess would not even engage in a discussion.

In the bigger sector linked in May or may not be your friend.

My dad was in the high end car business. This was long ago but they were constantly surprised by who got their cheque book out.

One thing I learnt many years ago in my business was to treat every potential customer with the same courtesy. It’s often the scruffy ones who have money and the quiet ones who have the decision making power

And that's exactly what we do. We have owners of yachts 80m plus that roll up in shorts and t shirts.

As I said if someone wants to talk to us we talk to them on the stand and understand their needs. It becomes very obvious very quickly as to whether they are serious and they declare that. If we are the slightest bit unsure we will still run with it.

I have mentioned already at this level it’s easier to qualify interested parties.

When I say qualified I am not talking a face to face at reception I am talking established relationships.

It’s far harder sub 24 metre / Princess / Sunseeker territory.

This forum is a classic example of never judging a book by its cover ;)

On the original topic: I’m going with my reserved mate. Leaving the families home this time we have Friday and Saturday to spend at the show.

That's the most condescending thing I have ever read on this forum!

What an odd thing to say ? It’s often very well received and is more than most do after they decline a visit.

Tell me why ?

Well, it does sound condescending, doesn't it?
Neither your intentions/kindness nor the gadget appreciation have a lot to see with that.

Now, why do I have the funny feeling that by the latter you actually mean wives? :D
Ok, maybe not in your business, I suppose. But still...

It’s a good job a know this forum inside out and can deal with the nonsense.

I was asked a question about how do you qualify ( if you can) someone who wants to look at a large +30 metre BROKERAGE yacht.

I explained OUR process that includes speaking to anyone and spending time with them understanding their needs this includes showing them the yacht.

I also explained that it’s far easier to spot someone that has no purchasing interest and they often volunteer that themselves.

We have a large selection of giveaways items in the counter including caps and we are happy to offer a cap or similar if we have to decline a viewing.

As I said these are not new yachts these are owned vessels and our sole objective is to find a buyer.

Most people, and there will be more this year with the new Canto layout, have no interest in our other than curiosity and our owners ( and crew) simply don’t want hundreds of people walking over their privately owned yachts.

As I also said I have yet to meet anyone who asks at the counter to view who does not understand and appreciate that.

That’s why we offer a gift should they wish to take It.

As an aside offering a giveaway Ian standard practice at a show.

Ours are good too !

Let’s not start a fight over what was a simple humorous one liner aimed at JFM as I know he has often looked at the Princess range and we have one on display.

God I miss this place.... like a hole in the head ;)

Agreed. I appoint you as my special envoy to the Cannes boat show and give you full permission to go on every superyacht you see and eat and drink as much as you can. The cheque book/ credit cards have to stay with me though;)
I don’t think that I’m going to get the invitation. And I didn’t even mention my dog:(

Have you checked that dogs are allowed ? Monaco Yacht Show only allows small dogs and yes that’s in the FAQs !!

I couldn't be more far from wishing to start a fight - in fact I didn't: I just confirmed my understanding of what MrB said.
Besides, personally I see nothing wrong in your approach, including the gadget offer.

But you'd better come to terms with the fact that offering a cap "instead" to someone who wish to view a boat does sound condescending, no matter what.
And if someone highlights that, you can't dismiss it as a nonsense, because it's true.

So if a serious buyer of a forty metre boat turns up with a dog they wouldn’t be admitted ? Even the ones who arrive by helicopter to avoid the queues ?

blimey, give Time Out a break, he's trying to be fairly open and reasonable

Well said .
I don’t know why people are continuing getting so up set about this ?
Perhaps if those critical of the whole “ qualification “ thing could attempt somewhat to put themselves in the sellers shoes .
It’s a used boat section previously across the bay in the other port .
The broker i assume has all ready invited known prospects scattered throughout the days and obviously on top of theses there gonna be walk ons .
Ironically a walk on motivated by being 9issed off by a :)competitor .

Anyhow some one once told me ( adding to the quali “argument “ ) they the sales guys look at your watch and shoes as a starter .I know book by its cover but that the clothes the major visual that can be deceiving , the wrist and feet aren’t dumbed down so are a give away ........... just saying guys .:)

I disagree, perhaps I should word it differently.

It’s offered as its on the counter in fact 99% ask before it’s offered.

It’s not offered as a replacement for lack of visit offered as a gesture.

Our hands are tied slightly as we only offer pre owned yachts for sale of a certain size and can only offer viewings for visitors with a serious purchasing interest. Let’s jot go into how we tell again as I said it’s different from the main stream.

Jeez talk about thread drift ! But that’s what this place is known for.

Nothing would please me more than being offered a cap from Riva upon being declined access to their stand ! And I own a Rivale ! Albeit a four wheeled version ;)

Anyhow I look forward to seeing you all there at some stage.

To add those that know me ( that’s most on here ) know I would never be condensing to anyone that came into the stand.

Have a good day !

It’s not Time Out, it’s the whole boat show thing where all the big boat passerelles are raised just out of reach. Kind of a metaphor for life:(

LOL, yeah, and talk about when in a hole, stop digging...
What part of "I see nothing wrong in your approach, including the gadget offer" is difficult to understand? :)
That doesn't change the fact that qualifying your previous statement as condescending is hardly a nonsense.
