I have just bought a new boat and have found that as well as being on the SSR, the boat also has a certificate of irish registry dating from 1981. Does anyone know what this might mean practically in relation to cruising in Europe. Also in the UK what is the status of an Irish registered yacht. Any insights into this situation positive or otherwise gratefully received

The 1981 Irish registration would have been to the then owner and if not transferred to another qualifying person has expired. so no value whatsoever to you. There is no requirement to register a private boat in the UK. The SSR is intended to enable the owner, who must be UK resident to comply with the international requirement when outside the UK to identify as a British Ship. Part 1 registration does the same thing but is also a register of title.

The important thing when buying a boat is to have sight of documentation that clearly shows the seller has title to sell and pass to you, usually by way of Bills of Sale. The only registration that does this in the UK is Part 1.

The Irish registration may or not be still active, even if it has not been updated.

If you enquire you may find that the boat was mortgaged and sold improperly and thus the change to the SSR rather than Part 1 which is a title registry, like the Irish Registry.

Of course it is probably a case of a boat being passed along with the cert and no one bothering to do any formalities of sale/purchase as is the norm when it comes to boats over here.
