I have noticed that Kim has beem alluding to charging us for use of this forum in many of his recent posts both here and on Mobo and Practical. This subliminal messaging would indicate to me that this is probably under consideration at IPC or at the very least has been discussed. It would be helpul to hear if this is the case and also how forumites feel about this possibility ?

Ah but

Like the Ivy Restaurant letting in famous types without reservations to glitz up their guest list, kim would have to charge less for those forumites who make significant or highly erudite contributions wouldn't he?

Alright, er how much will it be then?

In a way, IPC do charge for this forum already. The income from the magazines' cover prices and page revenues from the Advertising make a profit. Out of that profit comes the Forum!

I know that this is a simplification of the situation but is none-the-less correct.

Rubbish !

In fact I have on two occasions had Kim offer to provide for groups that I look after ...... Is that pricing or service ?

In recent posts Kim has defended IPC and actually in some instances not followed the IPC path - he has only answered or corrected others comments when necessary. I support Kim in his ways - he quietly reads through / administers these forums - just imagine if you had to sit reading some of the crap that gets posted and then have to answer for your work ....

Sorry but some of you guys need to consider what he does do and not what you think he will do .....

Kim - You're alright mate - mines a Guinness at Folly !!!

I would have thought that we pay for the facility by buying their mag’s, and they get as much out of it as we do my monitoring the (some) topics we discuss to keep the magazine articles current and relevant.
OK so I live in hope /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I would go to one of the other free forums.

The internet always has been and always should be built on the premise of free usage in the public domain.
Whilst I appreciate that there probably are substantial costs in administering forums, most publishing organisations, in fact most organisations...full stop, see the internet as a marketing tool, and in some cases (like the BBC) as a revenue stream from sales. Personally I pay nearly 12 pounds a month (with delivery) on IPC products every month (3 mags PBO, MBM, MBY). That is more than I pay NTL for my phone rental for instance. Surely that is loyalty enough, without having to charge us to use their own marketing schemes. If what you say is true then I dont see why we as users of the forum should make up the difference for IPC's failure to maximise their revenue from the internet. They should at least be breaking even on admin costs from deals with suppliers and advertising. If they are not, with the socio-economic demography available in the marine world, then there is something wrong.

I can only hope that it isnt true, as it is likely to do untold damage both to these forums and in the long run to IPC's marine division magazine sales.
They should be worrying about the big issues like RD derogation Light dues etc.
rather than extracting a few measly squid from users of their internet sites.
The RD issue threatens to decimate the marine leisure industry if the derogation is not kept. People will either get rid of their boats (what price a twin diesel tub then?) or fund their fuel from the money they used to spend on gadgets and magazines..ie the frills. Wake up NOW!
Enough said.

Steve.

Sorry..woke up in a bad mood this morning. Withdrawal symptoms from not being down on the boat.
Kim and staff, please dont take my previous message as an indicator that I do not appreciate your websites or the work you do..I do..but there are more important issues at the mo..

Steve.

Stop posting all these wide URLs and making me scr

oll horizontally

There's no chance of IPC ever charging for this forum as there are half a dozen very underused alternatives just sitting out there waiting for this to happen.

Remember how BYM jumped into the gap last time these fora were suspended.

The forums are an excellent low-cost market research tool for IPC apart from anything else . . .

Badger, you're getting paranoid.

Re: Here\'s one

Oh yes - I thought you might point that way ..... reading Kims message it is clear that it is a)tonguer in cheek - he says that himself, b)in response to the original point that bflyers and inserts were not liked - so he made valid point that all advertising would be stopped - but bthen someone would have to pay the differences etc.

I honestly didn't read it the way you have _ I don't think there was intention to imply fees were to be inflicted for forum .....

C-mon read it in its context and which post generated his response ....

I read nearly all posts and I have yet to see where a plain comment implies that IPC would do such a thing ..... thats not to say it couldn't happen ..... if it did - I have my own forum ready to go - so not a problem for me ..... but that is from another scenario completely.

When YBW shut down before

Yahoo groups gained 3 new groups .....

PBOMeet - named after the people that had met via the R2R forum.
Solent Life -
My-Yacht -

But the foirums didn't shut because of finaces - it was because my ID and others had been hacked and hijacked .... before it shut down - myself and others were basically forced to take on aliases to continue posting. Kim had to spend alot of time and effort to increase security but still able to laeve the forum accessible .... it took him a long time to get it up and running again. He took a lot of stick for the new format and style - but its all worked out and a bloody good job he did too and STILL DOES.

I would like to see more valuable posts which would in themselves thank him for the ffort he puts in..... instead of some of the prods and complaints.

Re: When YBW shut down before

I'm with Nigel-
Thank you Kim and all the others for making my life less dreary, and having the sang froid to answer with humour and (sometimes) humility.
I would miss this place, and I aint been here long.
I see no evidence of IPC joining Microsoft in the Dark Side of the Force.
