Hello.
It's time to up grade my iPad. Any thoughts please on a good device with GPS to enable me to run Navionics.
Thanks for any advice.

I bought an iPad Air last year, the model that has a sim slot. I bought a a Yakker which sends AIS data by WiFi from my SH VHF. Works brilliantly with Navionics.
my old iPad 2 worked fine but needed a Bluetooth GPS connection.

Cue the iPad vs Android party !!

Me - I'm a dedicated Android user ..... dual sim ... GPS .... SD card ... OTG .... WiFi ...... for half the money of Samsung .... and I can afford to replace if needed compared to the exorbitant price of iPad ...

Even my old Nexus on my Video Drone knocks iPad for six ....

Final nail in iPad coffin ... most Android app's can be obtained in FREE as well as paid versions ... with no locked in Apple tricks like the old iTunes / Apple Store etc.

Thanks for all the tips. You've raised an important point davidpbo. My little ships home port is in Greece so need to look for; I guess something with hi screen resolution or a matt finished screen. Our should I just wear polaroid sun glasses?

what is the point of this unhelpful post?

Assuming the OP wants an iPad then I would say you don’t really need the large pro. The mini is in course of retirement I suspect so assuming you want the GPs then a quick trip to John Lewis website shows you mid range prices -get the newest you can but don’t really need large memories maybe to keep down cost. That said my old iPad happily runs navionics so you might be content with a recon version . I see you say upgrade your iPad so what screen Size do have currently -a 10 maybe ?

Is there a difference in functionality between iPad and Android with Navionics?.....there used to be where the iPad got more features but that was a while back.

These days the iPad might not have proper GPS whereas the Android tablet almost certainly will, so it's generally the Android tablet is the preferred choice.

Well. Controversial...

All iPads since day 1 have always had GPS in SIM versions, and never had GPS in Wifi only versions. People might well prefer Android especially on price, but both work properly as a Navionics host if you have the GPS.

But if you like Apple as I do, then the iPad is the "preferred" choice. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A for Navionics as a backup, it works fine for that and it's commendably cheap, but as a tablet I hate it, clumsy, awkward, mis-integrated (or dis-integrated) applications, two of everything but nothing works properly together. What a pile of crap. The hardware is fine, it's Android that lets it down with Samsung's bloatware smothered over the top like a tart's lipstick. I'll never buy another Android device.

So it's not "the" preferred choice. It's "a" preferred choice. Just not mine :)

I bought an Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 lite a few weeks ago I am pleased with. Build in GPS, £300 from Samsung. Not easy to see in bright sunlight.
I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e last year, which is about the same price, and found it fine in sunlight.

One member of this forum complains about its wifi, but I've never had any problems with it.

Comparison article: Is that S Pen enough for you to get the Tab S6 Lite over the Tab S5e?

I recommend the LineageOS ROM over Samsung's, if you're technically minded.

This season using a Samsung Active Tab Pro with Navionics

waterproof and fairly bullet proof.
Very good - Navionics fully functional - Wi-fi pick up AIS from quark, and ST60 info from nmea via quark

very good battery life - and screen visibility in full sun (bearing in mind we’re in Scotland- it needs to be waterproof ?)

My introduction to Navionics was via a refurbed 10" Ipad with GPS.
Only hiccup was needing a cigar adaptor which would supply sufficient current to charge unit while underway.
