iPad and GPS

You can certainly get bluetooth dongles. You may well be able to get one that plugs in the docking port, but I'm not certain. Haven't heard of anything to share the phone's position.

Bad elf GPS is often recommended. No experience of it though.

However - fairly expensive. You may be better off buying a cheap hand held GPS and using it standalone or buying another Ipad with 3G or even 4G.

Not heard of sharing the phones signal - try it though - pair the two and then go to maps on the IPad. If it puts the blob in the right location then it's worked.

Bad elf works very well. I had EGNOS (SBAS) with 5m accuracy all the way from the Algarve to Azores back in june. coupled to Imray Chart Navigator it made a great backup plotter.

second hand ipad

In the end I gave up with addon equipment and bought one of the many very cheap second hand Ipad2 3G/GPS machines on ebay. Works superbly well in the cabin of my mobo - picks up the GPS signal immediately through fibreglass no problem and runs the Navionics app very well as I have described in other threads. I think other threads have stated that you can't pair an ipad to a phone to get the GPS signal but can't be sure. Usual limitations on ipads apply - not great in very bright sunlight and not waterproof but I am now using it as my main plotter for Solent pottering and very happy. You don't need to put the SIM card in to make the GPS work but I have taken out a supplementary SIM contract to add to my Vodafone account at a fiver a month and it is great to be able to access the internet on the move for weather etc

Quick look on ebay shows they are around £240
