Apparently there are a few Ipad anchor alarm apps. Has anyone got any experience of one that they can recommend?

I quite like drag queen because you can easily centre it on your anchor as opposed to your boat (you just enter that your anchor is bearing XXX to the boat and XXX metres away). The t+c you have to agree to is absurdly onerous but I dont lose any sleep over that

Surely you set the alarm where your phone will be & if that moves by x meters it will alert you, for example if your boat is the size of an aircraft carrier (don't answer that one JFM :)) & you set it to where your anchor is,you then retire to your Admiral's quarters the alarm will go off which would then waste a rating's time investigating or am i missing the plot ?

Set it to your anchor's location then you should only move within a set radius of your anchor. If you start off with your current position, you could be dragging for a while before the alarm goes off.

Yup you are missing the plot! With a normal anchor alarm you set it and the boat is then at the centre of the geofence circle. With these apps, your boat is preset nearer the edge of the circle1, which is how it should be. When you set the alarm, you tell the app that your anchor is 40m to your north or whatever, and in that 40m you include distance from bow of boat to master cabin or wherever your iphone is.

I just looked back in the appstore and I now see this feature is in pretty much all anchor drag apps. It aint unique to DragQueen, so i sort of take back my recommendation of Dragqueen

Also beware of "Anchor drag alarm (Anchor guard)" by Alejandro Navigation. This has nice graphics but there was a clue in the name - it has downloaded in Spanish with no apprent option to change the language, doh. Another £1.49 wasted!

Still, it's a great name for a product and would be my app of choice for that reason unless someone markets one called "hooker-up" or sim'lar. :D

Anchor-centrism is a great feature because otherwise the blimmin thing always seems to go off as a result of the tide turning just when you're in the middle of something else. Not such a big deal in the med I guess, tho'

When you start to lay the anchor set your chart plotter anchor watch. It will be centred on the anchor. This does of course rely on the fact that you don't drag the anchor whilst setting it. Providing you have deployed sufficient chain it should dig straight in. Most dragging is caused when people try to support the boat on the anchor too early.

Henry :)

I see Activecaptain say there is a new version of DragQueen that works well outside of cell tower coverage.

I had a go with Anchor Watch which in theory works fine with what you would expect in features plus a few nice ones like calling another mobile on an alarm situation. Good when ashose in the pub!

The only downside I have found in the few times I have tried it, is that my iPhone's gps position varies in accuracy and causes false alarms. It might be my setup however and not a fault in the app itself.

I use that app and you need a wide guard circle because the boat swings with wind and tide. I'm not that convinced, most anchorages we use you'd be ashore before it went off and a dragging anchor makes a fearsome noise.

I forgot to mention that we're talking about SWMBO's Ipad here. Is there an app which advises husband how to tell their wives they want to download 'Drag Queen"?:)

You're about to take your darling wife to see "Priscilla" followed by a romantic dinner at Mr Roux's and then there's something you want to say to her...:D

and then there's something you want to say to her...:D
The only sweet nothings I get whispered in my ear these days is usually along the lines of 'did you remember to put the dustbin out, dear' or 'I forgot to tell you, my mother's coming to stay for a month tomorrow'. It's no wonder that blokes go off the rails and download drag queen apps

Tried but don't use phone app because 1) I don't want phone calls during the night, 2) phone tends to get moved too much so false alarms, 3) also eats battery when apps use phones gps. Instead I use a HH gps by the master cabin window when anchoring overnight. Works a treat and only inches from my ears.
