Thing that concerns me about 300W plus invertors, is the cooling fan. I use a 300Watt, fitted near the batteries but need to turn it off manually. So I also have a 150W sited near the 12V panel. Did yours have a remote on/off switch? The fan could be a significant drain.

The fan was a computer type brushless 12 volt one. They hardly use any current <15ma?

It may be because when the engine is started, the battery voltage is reduced. If the inverter were switched on it would increase the feedback voltage to maintain 230V mains output. When the engine starts, the voltage will increase and possibly causing an overvoltage condition that will destroy any connected equipment.
