I have been with supanet on their £15.99 package for two years without any problem. Since they have been pushing broadband my access has slowed down so much I sometimes think my head is going to explode! Coincidence or marketing ploy?

I've had a similar experience with the free service from Supanet so I "signed up" with RYA Online but found it just the same.

a lot of ISP's are virtual ISP's
That is they use the same provider and are purely an front end name

correction..

They are nearly ALL vISP's they just don't admit it..

very very very very very few of them are their own carriers..

even if they say they are they nearly always rely on Good Ole British Telecommunications at some point in their network..

We are with Freeserve and I always believed that they were not a front... But lately we are getting problems with the server not being found, and huge delays in downloads. What is more frustrating is that we live in a rural area where there is not even the possibility of broadband (too far from the local exchange hub thingy or whatever) for us to get broadband even if the whole village were to register and trigger BT into action.

freeserve problems

i'm on freeserve. i find that it frequently stops part way through downloading a page, especially if it contains a lot of grapics. i have to press 'refresh' about every other page, it's a real pain. i'm due to get broadband next month then move to a remote area without broadband shortly afterwards. i won't be going back to freeserve.

Try Plusnet www.plus.net they are an ISP and they are very straight about the service with several different packages to choose from. every one does what it says on the tin.

Personally I have broadband and would thourghly recomend it.

Marketing ploy, and if you're as lucky as I am when you change to broadband that runs even slower. Took a recorded delivery letter to MD of Tiscali to get my broadband connection running at anything above 15kbs. Even now it's only 28. So much for "upto 10 times faster".

Asked Virgin about their service and they had the decency to admit there would be a slowing as more people connected but they "hoped to keep abreast of this with continual improvements". They declined to give a minimum connection speed I could expect. BT haven't even bithered to reply.

don't rule out cable, especially if it's downloads you are mainly interested in. They seem to have a good infrastructure in some areas and I the people I know who have it swear by it rather than at it!

My experience, Phil, is that the only one that really works is cable tv broadband. Does your broadband supplier have a users' group? Or a usenet group? You might get advice there. Usually the problem with slow broadband is that they've got too many users logged on to on of the networks, which are physical and local.

I can't speak highly enough of ntl to be honest.
15.00 a month I pay..
That gives me "free" internet access (i dial an 0800 number)
The 15 pound also covers our phone calls.

If we only spend 8 pound a month on phone calls we still pay 15.00 (thats why it's "free" internet access)
If we spend 20.00 a month on phone calls they charge us 20.00..
The only snag is you get disconnected every 2 hours.. but I can live with that

Interesting that your broadband only shows 28kps. I've got broadband with Pipex and it always shows the connection speed at 576kps. It's always showed that since I started. You should complain again !

I have BT Openworld. I don't know if that counts as broadband but it connects quickly at 64.
However, I have been disappointed that BT have progresssively and unilaterally diminished the contract I signed with them by reducing hours of acccess. To be fair It has not affected my use, but it no longer matches their marketing of 24hour access for the single monthly payment of 14.99.

Go Broadband as soon as you can! The difference is amazing. Speed of internet connection (including broadband) is not only dependent on your ISP but also how far you are away from your exchange. The connection is affected by how many junction boxes etc. there are between you and the exchange. When we moved premises our speed on an ordinary dial up service dropped dramatically. We asked BT to increase the "gain" on the line but saw only a marginal improvement. When we had the line assesed for broadband connection the engineer told us the we were just above the limit where the speed would be unacceptable. Another 2 miles further east away from the exchange and it would have been a non starter.
