We are looking for a reasonable price for a set of 36ft boat cushions, ( fwd & aft berths and saloon)

we have had a few mad quotes for basic flat cushions.

our foam is all ok but the cushions are vinyl and we want them as cloth.

ideally south coast based.

mad quotes
What do you call mad though? I often find things sound expensive but then if you work out the cost of fabric (easily £50-£100/m for decent stuff and probably 10-20m required) and then the day rate of a professional skilled person, let's say £250 a day for 4 days the quote will start to appear more reasonable. If new foam was required it would add a considerable cost too so £3-4k wouldn't be unusual in my opinion and is why most people live with worn cushions

Thanks for the suggestion, We have had anything from 4-8k quoted at the moment,
I appreciate that decent closed cell foam is expensive, but trying to gauge the costs at the moment

Another vote for Sewtrim (post#3). Steve did an excellent job on our GH31 Recovered all bunk cushions and made 2 new backrests 4 end rests and a headboard for well under £2k 3 years ago. Mistake to reuse old foam and later replaced all old for about £350. Photos show end result. BTW Steve also did the seats of my Morgan in leather for almost half the price of other quotes.

A happy Sewtrim customer here. However Steve has warmed me when I need to replace the sculpted foam backs and faux leather trim it will be expensive!

I used to do upholstery in Scotland until a couple of years ago. I will be starting up again when we move to Cornwall soon, near St Austell.
I have a basic charge of £80 plus material for a standard cushion without piping, £95 with piping. Fabric is usually between £30 - £50 per metre and a cushion might take 2m, so ball park £180 per cushion. I did a lot of the 30-40' charter boats and a saloon might be around £2.5k. Obviously new foam bumps it up quite a bit.
That might sound cheap but it gives me £40 per hour and probably £500 markup on fabric for a typical boat.

To give you a better idea Steve at Sewtrim charged me just over £3k in 2021 to recover all of the cushions on my Moody 36 including new foam for three of the seat bases and the chart table seat..so that's 2 x double berths, 1 x single berth, 2 infills, the chart table seat and 10 saloon cushions with most being shaped rather than flat. I'm sure it would cost more now but I'd use him again with hesitation

The only thing I would add is not to go too cheap on the fabric.

I have had times where a beer has been split on board... I've taken the cushion out onto the pontoon... hosed it down.. then not long later it's dried off and back on board.

I must have water (or beer) repellent fabric..

Good man.

My local non marine guy charges £100 per cushion Nautalux vinyl supplied, reusing the foam.

It is not a difficult job to do yourself. Go to a fabric shop and pick out what material you want. get a sewing machine and thread. I prefer velcro type fastening the back. ol'will
