I'm lining some of the cabin in my westerly griffon with 4mm teak faced ply I want the finish to match the existing teak which just has a soft sheen rather than glossy varnish surface. How can I get this same look? any ideas

I have recently used a stain (in my case mahogany) which had wax added on a ply, so it dried to a sort of "soft sheen". Afterward I varnished it because it was for a table and needed added protection. But it may be worth trying something along those lines on a test piece. I purchased mine here in Italy from a wood merchants, so it will not help if I gave you the make - but I'm sure you can find something similar.

Use a satin varnish.

It's inside, so it doesn't need to be pukka marine stuff. If you want to seal it and give it a satin appearance without changing the colour, use acrylic varnish, if you want it to have the traditional yellowish varnished finish use polyurathane. I have some bits of boat drying downstairs now that I just put the first coat of Ronseal floor varnish on. I used polyurathane to match some existing wood. On the floors of my house, it lasted 5 years, in spite of a hoard of teenagers.

I use <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/product/product.jsp?CATID=183658&entryFlag=false&PRODID=69658> B&Q decking sealer / waterproofer</A>. The teak shade is a bit dark, clear or lighter shades are better.

I usually give a couple of coats of International 'Original' gloss rubbing down with a 300 grit betwwen coats followed by one coat of Ebifanes 'rubbed' finish.

Gives a nice deep satin finish.

Cheers

You could also use the epifanes gloss, but I agree this is how I do it, the gloss varnish gives great depth to the final coat of rubbed (matt sheen).

Epifanes semi gloss (matt) and a coat of "mr pledge" furniture polish over the top once dry - looks good and matches the original satin finish on my woodwork nicely

Agree.
i use the international satin then after about 24 hrs of the last coat get the finest grade of steel wool oooo ( i think) spray the surface with furniture spray to act as lubriciant & lightly rub with steel wool to de-nib & remove imperfections.
suggest u try a sample panel @ home first.
