Indeed. It seems to me that big catamarans are the obvious candidates for ‘electrification’. Loads of real estate for panels, and plenty of space for a hoofing great battery bank.

However weight is the enemy of speed on a multi. Not as bad as all that, because the motors are light. But the setup is heavier than a diesel sadly. It’s on the ‘we’ll get there eventually’ list.

Pure electric is limited even for multihulls because of the weight and bulk of batteries to get a decent range, particularly if you also want to go electric on all the other things that are possible with the space such as electric cooking, freezers, AC etc. Hybrids however are much more promising either serial with a generator or parallel or a mix

Rumour has it that the latest battery developments have doubled the Kwh per kilo. But I think they’ll need to do that again before a big multi can go fully electric. And the first bit isn’t in production yet….
 
Huge multis are a problem in most harbours. It's why I have a narrowed beamed one, namely a 9m Catalac. Perfectly big enough for my use.
They have a lot to be said for them. We’d love a big daggerboard boat like a Dazcat, but it’s not just the money. And realistically, the Dragonfly does everything we need, plus is narrower than a lot of modern AWBs of 30ft. We do not need an aluminium expedition boat. It’s great to admire others’ tastes though, lots of design features from ‘ultimate’ boats filter down to the more mundane in time.

I never understand the hurry...I yearn to go sailing, when I do I have to race to get wherever as quick as possible then get off.....don't make sense to me...
Enjoying the boat being on the water for as long as possible is why I like boating ..

You enjoy your bit, I’ll enjoy mine. It’s a bad day at the office if we don’t see double figures. We don’t spend any less time than you, we just go further. The speed opens up your cruising options. Some years back, in a solid easterly, we went to Cherbourg for lunch, and came home again. Nowadays it’d take you too long to check 8n and out of course😂 Now we’d want a southerly, and go along rather than across.

Of course, wouldn't have it any different.
But many posts here when "asking for advice " type of boat, speed seems to be always emphasised......whereas I don't care when I arrive, even if it means sitting off waiting for the tide. Comfortable boat is more important than speed for me.

I like to see the spray sparkling on the matt black of my sail numbers, and hear the water rushing down the hull to become part of the sharp V of the wake.
