Interesting article about the piers around Kent.

I like piers a lot, both to sail past and to visit. Unfortunately, their chief raison d'etre no longer exists, as stopping-off places for ferries and excursion ships. Let's hope that the increase in domestic tourism over the next few years will help to maintain them. In the Baltic, especially in Germany, they are still very much functional, with a lot of coastal traffic which is well patronised. There is a handsome new one at Heiligenhafen where you can go and do absolutely nothing for as long as you wish, while the children play on a water playground.

Kent is overwhelmed with peers, All mincing about in their burgundy cords and racy slip on boat shoes. Then there are the Captain Corelli mob, or have I got the name wrong.
Regulars up and down the High Street up the Creek.
Seems to be a shortage of matelots offering a bit of rough....

why is this post in italics?

Because you italicised it, with the third symbol at the top.
