how long would it take to strip and clean out the intercoolers on a 63P normally. I have good access to port engine side which is getting a bit warm. SWMBO wants to know how long its likely to take so she can go shoe shopping. and I want to know how long its takes to limit the credit card damage she will inflict in my absence. apologies to you people in england but the sea down here in the med is 32 degrees and my previously fine engines are getting a bit to warm. I have been underneath and chased out the water inlets but still getting a bit warm. any advice would be appreciated.
 
You will find its both the heat exchangers and intercoolers that are partially blocked, id do the lot, but no easy task on the stb engine.
 
If you are in Spain then get a dozen bottles of (strong acid) from the supermarket, mix it 50% with water then flush it through the engines leaving it to work for about 10mins, then run the engines back on sea water for 10mins to flush out the acid.

You may want to change the impellers afterwards or fit some used spare ones first.

Kas is it race to ge the coolers done before she comes back with too many shoes???? If I were you id spend a little more time on your coolers and do a thorough job yourself because if you get a dealer in to do it she could probably buy the shop for the same money!.

If you can smuggle 5 litres of rydelime across that would help, but whatever you do id take a ll the o rings for the end caps of the coolers as thats where you need to start, you cant remove the end caps very easy where the 2 coolers meet in the middle, id also take a 4mm diameter rod with you to rod the tubes which you can do the intercooler from the back and the heat exchanger from the front after removal of the alternator.

Personally id look at the gearbox oil cooler first as its the easiest there may be a blockage there stalling the raw water flow out, it could also be the exhaust elbow outlets.

Out of interest sea temps play a big part, I did a sea trial sat am in the solent on a pahntom 43 ac with 63ps in , even at 2200rpm the sea water outlet hoses were a good 50deg c after the sea water had done there job, the sea was 18 deg c so if the meds well up on temp this time of year your motors will run hot as there just is not the lower sea temp to take out the engines heat.
 
I'd concentrate fully on the engine and gearbox heat exchangers, and not the intercoolers. An ineffective intercooler will cause less mass of air to enter the combustion chamber, which will cause loss of power but not hot running.

Agree with you on this we did this to a hot running KAMD43, mixed 50/50 water and "aquaferte" (thats the stuff in the supermarkets) in big container, sucked into raw water intake, sorted the problem

Hi John, on this motor the sea water enters the intercooler first from the sea water pump, if the tubes are blocked then the correct volume of sea water cannot pass into the heat exchanger, its a common problem on this motor and the 73/74/75 series engine as is in actual fact the favourite place id go for build up of marine growth to slow a raw water cycle down, had this recently on a phantom 40 to the extent that the rubber hose from the sw pump started to balloon under pressure as the water was stalling at mid rpm, hence little flow.
This particular boats only done 150 hours from new a 2004 boat, it just sows you what happens when your boats not used, the growth amazed me!!, another point if an intercoolers not working to capacity the heat build up can take the piston tops off, excess heat will damage the exhaust valves and valve seats in the head.
