Insurance renewal shock

I've just received my insurance renewal and the premium has gone up by 47%.
Standard cruising range. No special terms associated with the quote.
I will ask them to review the quote but, in the meantime, could you let me know which company you use so I can do some comparisons.
Thanks in advance.
Renewed my Haven Knox-Johnston insurance a few weeks ago, 5% increase over last year with no changes

Thanks in advance.thats large hike not dissimilar to somevcar renewals i hve heard of. I hve a credit on my ins broker a/c. rather than requesting a refund. I though that would😎 reflect in my nxt quotation, 🤔

Bishop Skinner. Small increase, boat in commission 12 months of the year on a Thames swinging mooring. I did shop around but some companies wouldn't insure the location

The boats, sailing area and where you keep it make lots of difference,
For us, there is a much smaller choice as a 38' yacht that will go down to La Rochelle in this summers trip away you have fewer choices.
But having talked to GJW and explained the plan and the recent upgrades to the boat held the same price.
Some would not even discuss

Just had renewal quote from Pantaenius - also 45% up. We have been with them for nearly 30 years and never had a claim. This is taking the mickey IMHO so we shall be taking some advice from this thread. Thank you all.

I've just renewed with Insure4boats. No policy changes and 10% down on last season!
I just got an online quote from Insure4Boats and it took a while to find the policy wording on their website. I had ticked the box for continental cover too but I did not find the policy wording very clear so I called them. Yes, they said, you would be covered for UK coastal water as well as European coastal waters, as it said in the policy. It was only after I took two attempts to get them to understand that those two areas were not connected they told me I would not be covered while crossing the North sea or the Channel and did not offer me an alternative policy.

An update..... it seems that the main cause of the huge uplift in insurance premium was that our vessel had a 'Big Birthday' last year. I complained. Partly that I don't get why the price should be based on age when, after about 5-10 years, the value is more in the condition (a 40-year-old boat that has had most major items replaced and is maintained scrupulously vs a much newer boat in poor condition). The irritation was coupled with the fact that we had to pay a surcharge to renew the previous year as we hadn't had a recent survey. Renewal was April and survey couldn't be carried out until May. What is laughable is that, once the (glowing) survey was received (Joe Kershaw - thanks for the recommendationa in here), I called to say it had been carried out and offered to send a copy, and they said it was not necessary, they just needed to know it had been done. I have since sent it plus a list of the updates carried out in the past 12 months costing £000s. They have relented and reduced the premium to a level that is slightly above last years but what a crazy way to run a business.

That's completely barking, especially when considering that a claim is far less likely to stem from offshore sailing. I'll investigate my small print and see if it's the same.

Just renewed my Haven Knox Johnston (Amlin) All weather Policy - No increase on last year’s premium.

Additionally, from personal experience, they pay claims with no quibble.

I went with Haven Knox Johnston. Their cruising range is quoted as "Inland and Coastal waters of the United Kingdom and Eire, including Continental waters between the River Elbe and La Rochelle" but they confirmed by email that did include passages between those two areas and their documents even show the picture below,

I decided not to renew with Navigators and General as although they quoted the same price as last year they insisted on a survey. Haven Knox Johnston were £10 less and no survey required.

Surprised HKN will take on a new customer without a survey but I understand once surveyed, provided cover is continuous, HKN will not require further surveys.

I have been fighting with my insurance company since October last year when my boat grounded after the anchor chain broke. Unfortunately I also had a concussion at the time but it was interesting that the insurance company made me repsonsible for all decisions on the recovery of the boat. The insurance company paid for the recovery of the boat without a quibble but everything else has been extracting teeth. Still arguing with them about the fact that I had the engine taken out of the boat for repairs to the electrics as the boat lay on her side for two days being pounded twice a day at high tide and had over 45cms of water inside on the port side where most of my engine electrics are located. Also had water in the gearbox but can't see how that couild have got in.

I have not renewed with that insurer but have sought cover elsewhere. But after this experience am seriously wondering about self insuring for all but third party.

How did you sustain an injury during the incident and did you receive professional medical attention (including hospitalisation) and what reason was given for only covering the recovery, not the damage❓

Are you prepared to identify the insurer❓
