recently insured with GJW and looked at the policy regarding sailing and it states that for my size of yacht (34) i must have on board when underway an minimum of 2 competent crew unless stated in writing and agreed by them.

is this the norm now? I was insured with Holmans and they never stated any of this.
Does any one know what insurance is available that does not put on these restrictions?

bob

That sort of restriction is not uncommon.

I am insured with Pantaenius, one of the reasons I chose them is that they do not put that sort of restriction on my sailing, but these days I think they are more expensive than some others.

I spoke to GJW about this as I wanted to sail singlehanded. OK they said, policy noted, no extra premium. Daylight only and no more than 12 miles offshore. I daresay they could improve on that if you pushed it.

you did it wrong way round robertj. what you should have done is to tell them you wanted cover for single handing inc at night, as well as racing risks etc when you asked them for a quote. Most likely it would be thrown in FOC. I certainly found that with St Margaret and my previous insurer.

I've been with GJW for years, and for singlehanded sailing they stipulate Daylight hours only, but there's no boundary limit for going offshore. The excess does increase by 50% when solo, though as the norm is £100, that's not too much of a drawback.

noble limited my night singlehanded to 4hours, which i was initially a bit hacked off about, tho have not yet been tempted to do this...

I am insured through K Drewe brokers with AXA, my policy was limited to Inland and coastal waters of UK, on renewal this year I asked for the area to be extended Brest to Elbe, all done at no extra fee, wife then asked me to get confirmation no penalties as I am singlehanded 90%, again no problem. Seems if you do not ask you do not get, and so far no extra premium for me, and yes, I do only carry £100 excess.

I've been with GJW for 6 years and they ammended my policy FOC to permit singlehanding both day and night but increasd the excess to £500 for singhanded night sailing no coastal limit mentioned

I'm went through Admiral and they had the discussion with the underwriters and I have pretty much unlimited singlehanding within a 24 hour period ie. through the night is OK, but not two nights in a row.

My policy with GJW has been amended to allowed offshore and nighttime singlehanding but I had to submit an equipment list first.

Best of luck. They might be generous but basically you have done a deal with them, agreed the terms and the cost, and you're asking them to do another deal instead. Expect extra charges though you may be lucky and I hope you are.

Random insurance anecdote:
We'd just gone through the Raz when the skipper exclaims "Bu88er! I forgot about the insurance - where's my phone!"
<time passes>
"Yeah, great, Ok; so there's no extra charge and I'm on cover now, thanks"
