Pantaenius. The premiums are reasonable and their claims handling and customer service are excellent. You don't know how good an insurance company is until you have to make a claim. We had to make a significant claim a couple of years ago. Pantaenius handled it promptly and with no quibble. They also didn't increase the premium the following year which surprised me.

The op wants insurance for a swinging mooring,Gjw are reluctant to insure for a swinging mooring as are many other companies.I have been on such mooring for 40 years wIth no problems and no claims and have to insure with a different company,

+1 for Pants.

I did something really stupid leaving Salcombe a couple of years ago. Sketeched what happened on a piece of paper and took a photo with my phone. Emailed them with the explanation and told them the other boat would be in touch.

They contacted me when the other skipper contacted them just to confirm and that was the end of it as far as I’m concerened.

The don’t do NCBs so no problem at renewal.

Unless they get stupid with premiums I’m sticking with the devil I know pays up.

I'm with Pants.

Never had to claim..

I just called to move from a marina to a trot and found that there is no restriction, so no additional cost. Also had a good chat about the meaning of "agreed value" as my boat is, on the open market, not going to sell for anywhere near what she is insured for (at the recommendations of a surveyor). They encouraged me and said that accept that should I need to replace her, the cost of new engine, new sails and all the other stuff I've done to her, would mean I'd have to spend a considerable amount to get another boat to the same spec / standard.

More interesting, they could have knocked my cover down and kept the price the same as I am minimum premium. Their advice was to keep everything as it is as I would get the maximum value from my policy if the worst should happen.

That sounds like sound advice. Someone I know through an online Bridge site had a claim and the insurance company claimed they were under natured and it cost them a fair bit, but I can’t remeber the details. I haven’t spoken to him for a while but I’m sure he’ll comment if he’s still reading this forum.

Thanks all for the replies.
After doing many quotes I have gone with GJW Direct who were very well priced and even gave me a discount knowing I’ve never held yacht insurance before.

Cheers

Amazing isnt it. 30 replies and no one has anything bad to say about their insurers. What other field would that happen in?
My own experience, (Navigators, Knox Johnston, St Margarets) has all been good but then my last claim was in 1988.

Perhaps people are actually reading their insurance policy and understanding what is covered. House and car insurances seem much of a muchness with price being the major discriminator but boat insurance can vary widely between companies on what is actually covered. I am insured with Pantaenius with optional new-for-old but had to extend the standard coverage to include all of the British Isles - previously it was south to Gibraltar and north to Bergen - with cover for consequential losses, racing, single-handed (no 18 hour restriction), swinging mooring, and more, which matches my use of the boat, all at a price I don't begrudge. When I have shopped around, I failed to find a company offering the same level of cover though obviously the reduced cover suits many others.

GJW Direct have served me well. Very prompt response to a couple of small claims and they take a pragmatic approach to rigging renewal intervals. The premiums are competitive too. No connection etc, etc.

No, no, no ! Avoid GJW if a boat they have insured breaks off its mooring and crashes into your vessel, GJW will not pay out. EVIDENCE : A full two page artical in this magazine.

Interesting. Did they pay out on the legal costs of the insured owner to defend the court case?
