insurance companies

We are currently with Bishop Skinner marine, RYA/RNLI offshore members boat insurance ,I note that our policy is with AXA, but does mention underwriting by Towergate marine ,after reading comments on here regarding Towergate wondering if we should change as just in process of renewing ,anyone got any experience with Bishop skinner, had a quote from GJW and there's nothing in it, any comments most welcome good or bad:)
Yes, I have exp of bishop skinner, not through any policies I hold myself (because I wouldn't) but in helping others who have had claims rejected. The policy is full of significant exclusions and they are utilised aggressively, in my opinion, and I'd suggest you insure @GJW or Y or Pantaenius or elsewhere

Just to correct JFM -Bishop Skinner are a trading name of Bluefin Insurance Service Ltd and are most certainly NOT the same group as Towergate.
They do have a trading relationship with Towergate, but also place policies with Navigators and General, HKJ, and other leading yacht insurance markets.
I firmly stand by what I said, and reject your correction. I was not making a legal ownership point when I said "group". I meant they work together. If you make a claim under a policy u/written by Axa, and sold by Bluefin/Bishop Skinner, you WILL find yourself arguing the claim (if it is disputed) with Towergate. They work together as a team. It is irrelevant whether they are in the same corporate group.

Friend of mine was with Towergate and had a claim late last year. They initially denied liability, quoting (spuriously) an exclusion clause. A careful reading of the policy showed that the exclusion was irrelevant, and after a fair amount of correspondence they agreed to cover the claim. (It was a fairly big one - CTL of the boat). In the end they did pay out but caused my friend a few sleepless nights. Strangely he has insured his replacement boat with them (there's nowt as queer as folk I suppose).

I'm with Craftinsure, so far no problems and competitive prices, but no claims experience so far.

I have use towergate for none boaty insurance they have caused me many problems with some accounting errors.

Edit not detailing because the errors have not been solved yet and well I am still so angry about their service I may well say something I shouldn't

further edit

Although not really boaty,my boat club arranged insurance via Towergate and wrongly assumed that the cover suggested would be suitable for our purposes.
We suffered a considerable financial loss when the policy they provided failed to cover a pretty common event that most clubs will be faced with at some point or other.
That nearly happened to me but I caught the exclusion and rearranged but the the **** that has happened since is ...well:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Thanks for reply,s sorry for hijacking your thread Shaun ,just taken out new policy with GJW, due to recommendations on here, not the cheapest but that's not the point ,it's hopefully the cover it provides, that's the great thing about this forum, always good to here about feedback other,s have experienced . Insurance is something, you hope you never have to depend on, so if and when you do ,you hope you are covered :)

I was completely new to boating in early in 2011 and bought insurance for my 9m 350HP diesel sterndrive rib from Towergate, and I have renewed twice since then. So based on this thread, I just got a quote from GJW which compares premium wise as +50% for the same input data. It looks like their business model is to take intrinsically low risk (i.e. long serving in experience in particular) business, and nothing wrong with that. So for me with modest years experience (and no claims) I can (and do) have RYA tickets galore, and whilst the cover may well be "better" it seems to be available only when another insurer (like Towergate, I guess) has taken the early risk or put another way, accommodated my ambition to go motor-boating in the first place. GJW declined to quote on a 57ft motor cruiser, which kind of underlines my conclusion!

But if Towergate dont pay out, then you have wasted 100% of the premium with them.
jfm knows his onions, you would be foolish to ignore his advise

Andrew I totally agree with you - I went with these guys on JFM's recommendation as HKJ that I used previously was light on there cover and with these guys I can use the boat solo inc night passage so is good for me - T

HKJ standard policy wording includes cover for single handed passages of up to 18 hours duration................... whats your range and personal stamina that puts you outside their standard cover .

I like "if", it kinda says not enough knowledge; "when" is the upgrade. I have no problem with GJW's low risk only customer profile, but it demonstrably excludes newbies and we all have to start somewhere. So, wise words invited to insure when GJW et al don't want the cash flow.

Craftinsure don't exclude noobies and jfm says the policy is ok.

At his hourly rate it would cost you 10x the policy price for him to read it, yet he read a few and posted his view on here.

That should tell you he feels strongly about it.

He doesn't know everything, after all he thinks scatter cushions enhance a boat. But i trust his view on insurance.

Very much appreciated, off there next to find out. That is if I survive the RIBNET Cherbourg trip this weekend! I'm a bit disappointed with insurer's take on "experience"; whilst we all learn much by experience, judging by the number of boats and skippers that go nowhere, I'm not convinced that "risk" is particularly well assessed. I'd have a low premium with 5 years experience of going nowhere!! Compare that with "return", which I guess is the core for insurance business. RYA tickets have low status compared with "years" of anything, which includes nothing!

Just read through GJW's key facts. There is an "important provision" a simple statement requiring the insured informs the broker if the insured craft has a maximum design speed that exceeds...... 17kt. Policy holders who suffer from trust or rely on the blinding obvious may need to get writing!!
