My boat is fitted with a set of matching wind and water speed instruments by a firm called, Mariner Electronics Lymington. There are 5 analogue instruments mounted over the hatchway and a 6th Log counter by the chart table. They were probably fitted when the boat was new which was 1979. The water speed has packed up and although I have checked the wiring etc I have not found a fault. Does anyone know how I can check the transducer or if I can substitute it for another????

I do not know of the instrument make you are talking about, but if you find out how many magnets are on the paddlewheel (assuming it is a paddlewheel and not a propeller drive), you may be able to get another make with the same number of magnets.

Some makes have two magnets and some four. There are probably others with an odd number of magnets. I have a Navman which has four magnets. I think the older Stowe units had two magnets - though I could be wrong.

If it works, and I see no reason for it not to as most makes only count the pulses from the magnets, then all you would need to do is to calibrate it.

All this, assuming that it is the impeller unit and not the instrument itself.

if the transducer is a 2 wire type, you can check the instrument head by wining in push buttionswitch and press it quickly, and you should get a reading.
The transducer can be checked with a meter, as you slowly rotate the paddlewheel the reed switch in the sensor should make contact, dont use a battery and lamp as they do not like that amount of current
Also i have the wiring diagrams and may have some spares
