I am buying some new clipper instruments and want to mount them on the top of the cabin. Does anyone know of any commercially available pods which I can mount them on? I would like the face of the pod to be inclined at an angle for better visibility from the helming position.

I expect to have 4 units to mount on the pod.

Thanks

buy the clipper pods made by nasa instruments for the clipper system, each pod holds two instruments, i have had a stainless steel bar made for fixing over the hatch and have fitted two pods onto the bar, about £35 approx for each pod...

Thanks for your replies. I assume that the instruments are all fully waterproof and can cope with a big green un dumping in the cockpit? I had thought that they were vulnerable from the back?

Sounds good though and not even too pricey - a real bonus as I am on a shoestring as ever!

hi

I produce exactly what you are after, and give discounts for multiple orders, the units are made from grp and have a choice of two mounting angles, available in white or black. if you email me i will send pics and dimensions etc. oceanblu20@aol.com.

wouldnt dream of claiming anything for the manufacturers of the instruments, merely presenting data on pods that I knew about and you didnt /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

IMHO anyone who has a boat in UK that doesnt have a solid wheelhouse roof is asking for soaking clothes and water penetrated instruments.

G'day Mike,

Pods are a simple project to make, We use closed cell foam for the body and lexan for face plate with a black backing, all cables enter from the bottom so water is not a problem, the pods have a hood so reading in full sun is easy and it also provides protection from rain or that big green-un.

Just draw the footprint on the boat and make a cardboard template, use this to form the foam, bending it to a neat curve is achieved by making saw cuts about 5 mm apart and 15 mm from the cutting right through, bend by hand to check the shape is what you want; fill saw cuts with resin and filler then bend and clamp till cured. Glass over the top, cut a slot to take the front panel and black backing and glass into place. Cut a flat panel and glass to the base, shape with sandpaper and class. add a layer of microballoons over the whole thing and sand to a smooth finish. apply polyurethane paint and you have the perfect pod.

Tips: Add a small bead to the front underside of the hood, this will ensure water drains to the sides not to the face plate.

If you cable entry is from inside the cabin, add a small length of conduit that will stick up inside the pod to prevent water ingress and provide some ventilation, sikaflex it into the deck.

Andavagoodweekend...........

Thank you oldsaltoz. Sounds complicated to a starter like me. It's hard to imagine the level of my ignorance. I shall however persevere with your idea once I have found out what all the tekky terms actually are!!!! It obviously works well and I like the tips - everything carefully thought through.
