Installation of Garmin 750 chartplotter

Of course now I think about it there must be loads of yachts built with the magnetic steering compass on a pedestal and a chart plotter right next to it - Southerly Yachts 42RST was one I looked at - I wonder if I should email them to tell them they've made a terrible mistake? Maybe that's why they have a lifting keel, because the compass error is so much they are always at risk of running aground.

A couple of thoughts.

1. I had similar issue on last boat. I bought a fibreglass pod and mounted it on a stainless bridge above my companion way inside / aft of the sprayhood. I also mounted my other instruments in it plus a few useful switches for ais silent, rte alarm and stereo. I made a wood bridge first to make sure it all positioned ok before committing to the stainless fabrication cost. This temp wood fix lasted 3 seasons!

Edit. Check my signature link. One of the pics shows it. Chartplotter is the earlier 3006

2. Make up a deviation card if you mount it in the bulkhead.

Thanks for the link to picture - looks really good and is food for thought.

i intend installing a Garmin based NMEA 2000 on a Hallbery 352 I am refurbishing. Do I need to connect the 750S chartplotter to a 12 v supply or will the power supply in the network be sufficient? Any advice greatly appreciated

I spent an hour unsuccessfully trying to get my 750 to power up from the NMEA network as the supporting literature seems to suggest that the network should have a single power drop down cable. In the end I called the support number in the manual (it's down on the boat so can't provide today), the Garmin techie was very helpful and confirmed that the 750 needed to be powered up independently via the data/power cable supplied. Tried it and everything fired up first time. It was the standard 750 not the 750S but doubt that this will be different.
