My Beta BD662 engine was running strangely at the weekend and when I stripped down the injection pump I found two of the three piston return springs were broken. The fuel is clean. The pump is only a year old (and it cost the proverbial arm and leg). WTF? Has anyone ever seen this happen? Any ideas why?

If your engine is sea water cooled as opposed to fresh water then check you havn t had a leak at the water pump into the crankcase of sea water.

It is not unusual for these springs to be affected by sea water and start breaking

Well now that you mention it... this engine has a history of ingesting seawater due to a faulty exhaust system. So yes there has been oil contamination with water, now fixed I hasten to add. I am just glad that there is a possible connection between these two incidents, so if I solve one I should prevent recurrence of the other. Thanks for your post.
