In praise of the Bow Thruster

Absolutely no offence intended to chaps like yourself, Snowleopard, nor many others here. I don't doubt I'd gain a great deal by hearing anything you chose to discourse on, from ropework to sculling to celestial navigation.

It's only genuinely daft, untaught types without any real learning or foresight or experience to call on - those who daily advertise their ineptitude with ill-planned manoeuvres that go awry, and panicky haste and lots of lubberly yelling - they, I amuse myself by disrespecting, as idle incompetent slackers; and I've noticed that many who never previously exhibited enviable control, have since fitted bow-thrusters. I presume this is largely to veil their embarrassment...

...but, as I made very clear above, I'm happy to acknowledge that in the equivalent situation on the highway, I'm quite the opposite - the last person to criticise others' parking methods or practise 'ten-to-two' steering, or claim to know how I would have done anything differently or better...and even I pity anyone daft enough to think they're a better driver if they do speak up that way! Dreadfully boring. So, I do understand thruster-lusters' point of view. I just don't envy them, any more than my keen driver-friends envy me! ;)

Dancrane,

I acknowledge your climbdown - and accept your position. I now await assurance that if the next vessel you purchase comes fitted with a bow thruster, you will have it swiftly, and expensively, removed. You could even send it to me - I could do with a stern thruster.

Hmm...not sure I've climbed down that far, Captain C! I mean yes, you'd be quite welcome to the bally thing, but I can't imagine ever actually buying a boat with a thruster!

After all, I wouldn't want people to think I was...well, you know...

Let's quit, while we're at peace... :)
