In mast furling Mainsail - retrofit

Barnacle, I am passing on comments from a bunch of delivery skippers that have just wrestled with such a rig delivering to the SHBS (the equipment did look nice). BUT : They were very unhappy about the sail shape when reefed and the fact that there was nothing they could about it, no way to tension the foot. They were very happy about the weight coming down as the sail was reefed.

My only experience of boom reefing goes back to the days of the centaur with the crank on the gooseneck, and cotton sails if I remember correctly . . . . . that lot was changed for slab.

I do however have considerable experience of in mast and retro fitted in mast and even though our age is advancing I would not go back to it.

Is this the type you were thinking of?

Add on in mast reefing gear - the reality.

Sorry uploaded pic not very clear but you may be able to see the inovative way the main is stowed around the outside of the mast.

Z-Spars in mast furling

I have a Z-Spars in-mast furling that never jammed once in years. However this is not a retro-fit.

I would never again buy a yacht without an in-mast furling. Too practical, too safe for short or single handed.

I would not recommend a retro-fit, anti-economical, too heavy. If you really want one, and together with it there may be other improvements to your boat you could not do without, I found out that selling and buying a good second-hand is the most cost-effective solution.
