"In line/inline" engine definition [correcn, "on-line"]

One of our late club mates was known as Trevor the Tug. I only went on his tug once and remember the 2-stroke diesel engine which was started with compressed air. This was, as far as I recall, stored in something like large gas cylinders and there was a donkey engine that served to compress the air when needed.

In Denmark, working on a very small 'diving vessel' with only 4 of us onboard, a Captain, 2 divers and myself, we were about to leave Korsør harbour early on a very cold morning. One of the guys accidentally nudged the fog horn, which duly blasted out at full bore, but being January immediately froze into position, emptying the entire air tank. This single tank was charged from a compressor running from the main engine, and was also the engine starting tank: you see the problem?
We had a couple of things to do, my job was to defrost the jammed horn, the 2 divers ran an HP hose from the divers 'large' air bank to charge the vessel main tank, whilst the Captain explained things to the local Police who'd come to investigate WTF, and why so many locals had phoned them up to complain.

Really good Catch-22! Maybe the fog-horn button could have done with one of those security hinged covers to prevent accidental "nudging"...
