\"In Days of old

When Knights were bold
and GPS hadn't been invented
Sailors chucked bits of wood out the back
and had to be contented"

Seriously though, how are the old fashioned logs put together, what size wood? distance between knots? time of run?

anyone got any ideas.

Re: \"In Days of old

I'm at work at the moment, but I have a book called "Single Handed Sailing" by Frank Mulville at home. An interesting book, but with lots of occasionally over flowery passages, trying to capture the great philisophical "feeling of being one with the sea" and so on. He is, however, a great one for the "old ways". I belive he describes fashioning ones own logs and certainly plumb lines. I got my copy off Amazon. If I had it here, I would copy the section to you, but do not want to fall foul of any copyright laws!

As for time, the classic way was to have a crewmate watch a 30 second glass (egg timer!). If the ship was really moving they might have to use a 15 second glass, as the log could run off the reel entirely in 30 seconds!
