Good morning all and thank you for my inclusion in this group of wisdom.
I have just received the documents to my new boat, an Oyster 46 Ketch located in Preveza, Greece. The boat has been out of the water for the last 6 years and will need a good bit of work to hopefully recommission her to sail her to Viareggio for a full refit in a couple of months. I am thankfully pretty handy with boats and their workings, problems and catastrophes but will surely be asking the ´Oracle´ that is this group, for some advise along the way. Heading out to Greece next week to have my second look at her, first as owner and to start sorting out my work list, which I know will be long.
Thanks again for letting me in here and wish me luck! You can be as good as you want, but you won't get far without a good dose of luck!

Going to be going for 100m of 10mm calibrated, Italian chain with a suitably sized Rocna hanging off the end of it, that is, if the Perkins 4236 comes back to life, otherwise I might use that! Thinking about the chain & anchor means floating and I think I'm a little way away from that just yet.

Noooooo. You have just fallen into the first trap. Don’t talk about what anchor you are going to use or you will have a 20 page discussion on why another anchor is better !!!

Welcome to the Forum. Good luck with the project, it’s a lovely yacht and you're in a nice part of the World.

Enjoy your sailing (in due course…)

Now it's started, I'll kick off with suggesting that if you're going to be buying the chain, a smaller diameter of higher quality chain will put a a good bit less weight in the bow while giving the same strength.

If it's chain that's already on the boat in in OK condition, by all means keep the 10mm, you'll have plenty of other things to spend your money one!

Morning all. So after two visits to the boat, I am starting to get a little happier with things. Unfortunately I've not managed to get the old engine started yet - the impeller is in a ridiculous position where I would have to break my arm in a few places to remove it and it has become part of the water pump! The injectors were covered in diesel bug mud and once I had emptied the fuel tank of 650 litres of old diesel, found it to be full of sludge. Good news was that when I turned her over on the key, she burst into life with good pressure shooting the petrol I had put in the cylinders to clean them out all over the deck headliner. I have found a handy engineer who is going to hopefully get it started this week while I am back in Italy. I need to replace the water lift muffler and was wondering what capacity the new one should have? The old one is stainless steel and has various repairs on it which I presume leak.

You may find this helpful vetus.com/cms/wp-content/uploads/030419.04-r05-2022-01-NLP.pdf Vetus do a range of different types of waterlocks and this is probably the most versatile. The size is largely determined by the volume of water in the system which in turn is determined by the hose diameter rather than engine size. Expect your hose will be 75mm or bigger.

Vetus products are widely available in Greece.

Hi Cane Pazzo.
Looks like we have the chain and anchor sorted and have moved onto the engine,
650 litres is a lot of fuel to dump so I guess you will be polishing it.
Lots of posts on here for simple DYI polishing systems.
What engine do you have?
