Has anyone ever had the rubber part of an impeller slip on the metal drive bush?

just trying to get my head around my overheating problems.

See thread from Sunday titled " Overheating Volvo"

Yes I've seen it happen, used to be a regular problem with impellors for small Yanmar engines.

yes definitely. I've had it happen on Merc outboards, when I've left it too long between changes. This is a common mode of sudden failure for impelr pumps

Re: yeah but ... OHH it was hot

Ohhh it was hot,, and being anchored up in Langstone at midnight with only one hot engine was a little concerning, however, took the themostat out and limped home with a very cold engine.

I only replaced the thermoatat and the impelller last september, could these genuine volvo parts be faulty or is the good ship Ballena jinxed?

Run the engine, disconnect a raw water hose at the jubilee clip. If the inpeller bush is bust, it will dribble. If water is pumping ok, it will gush out. If you wanna be really fancy hook up a pressure guage and compare against spec. If reading is ok, then something else is wrong, like gunky heat exchanger. BTW, you have 2 pumps, right, one for raw and one for fresh?

If changed that recently, seems very unlikely impeller has busted

I presume you have checked the exhaust risers for bloackages! I had a similar problem last year and the riser water channels were clogged. This can cuase rise in temp due to poor water flow. Not to mention the fact that you can burn thru your rubber gatters. When they burn thru it goes with a bang!
