Boats still in the yard and I want to change the engine oil . With the impeller removed I can't think of a reason for not starting it to warm and stir it up. Can you

How are you cooling the block and exhaust whilst you warm it up ?

Its less easy but still possible to pump out the oil with the engine cold

Take the stress out of the equation : Put the impeller in before starting.
Presume you need it there before long anyway.

Put the impeller back in and stick a hose pipe in the raw water filter so you can circulate FW. That way the engine will warm up as intended and you'll have given the salt water galleries a flush through.

Drop the old one back in. Fit the new one. Use the old one that you have taken out and are still holding onto, but not used for five years.

You don't say if it raw or freshwater cooled. BUT, you are likely to cook the exhaust flex pipe and possible the water lift if not cooled by seawater

I was only going to start it for a couple of minutes, just to stir up the sump.

Just remember the sump gets its heat from the cylinder head so the head will get VERY hot before the oil starts to warm without any coolant!

Hose to a bucket and the water input pipe in the bucket.

Make sure nobody will walk by the exhaust as they might get scalded or at least a hot shower.

Engine blocks make very good anchors. Just getting them onboard is a problem.

If you don't intend to warm it up then leave it and drain the cold oil while all of it is sitting in the pan. No reason to distribute it, then stop the engine and drain what is still in sump (cold).
