There’s a video clip on his Instagram page of him ashore, beside his jury-rigged boat so I assume he motored back. Damien Seguin on Instagram

(I’m somewhere where I can put the volume up so don’t know if he comments on how it happened).

There’s a bit of detail of the damage to the boat in this article, but nothing about the circumstances of the collision.

On the positive side, Damien is unhurt, he managed to get the boat back to his home port of Lorient under his own steam, and the damage to the boat is reparable.

Amazing guy, and a fantastic sailor. I wish Damien all the best in getting the boat back up and running for next year.

Really pleased that he was able to deal with the situation himself and get back unaided.

Yep, great guy.
Fabrice Amedeo was less lucky. His Imoca has sunk after an explosion and fire aboard, probably caused by a leaking ballast tank that flooded his batteries. He managed to get into his liferaft and was picked up a few hours later by a container carrier that managed to pick him up in 5m swells.
The whole story is here: Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe

Yes, that sounded properly hairy. He was lucky to get out of that unscathed.

Can’t help wondering if the explosion and subsequent fire was a lithium battery….

Whatever it was, it blew a hole in the bottom of his boat.

Sounds likely as it was after all the electrics got flooded with sea water
Hmmm. If that’s what it was, it only goes to further my concerns about lithium batteries, and whether they are too good to be true. I’ve been wary of them ever since a mate’s laptop caught fire.

The explosion may have been a gas bottle. They have small gimbled gas stoves for cooking.

Does anyone know how Aurélien Ducroz lost his mast? Seems like the IMOCA fleet are taking a bit of a battering.

Edit: my mistake, he’s actually in the Open 40s.

I would have expected that those sorts of boats would have all the electronics needed to wake the skipper long before a ship could get close.
I’d assume that the commercial vessel also had someone keeping a lookout and enough electronics to alert the watchkeeper long before a collision was likely. So clearly we have two skippers who both failed to take sufficient action to avoid a collision.

Which is exactly what keeps me awake when single-handed but of course at some stage one needs to sleep.

And is why I would never singlehand on journey's where you need to sleep. IMHO its irresponsible and should probably be banned. I'm not a big one for banning things but if you can't keep a proper lookout at all times you are not properly manned.

Does seem odd when it doesn't take much power or cash to have a radar & ais receiver both with alarms. Not really first time either.
I sleep very well offshore solo, probably more hours per day than normal. ?
Coastal ain't fun though..

I think Alex Thomson proved fairly conclusively in the last Route du Rhum that it’s entirely possible to sleep through an alarm……..

He's crazy racer pushing beyond the edge every time second though , nothing like the rest of us. Alarms work fine, get a loud one. And don't get too tired.

You think this guy had alarms & slept through them? Any links?
