Imaginative repurposing of now redundant Calor gas bottles? :-)

no wonder there is a shortage of bottles when every one is chopping them up to make other stuff.

remember you only rent calor bottles just cos you acquired it by other means does not mean that is still not the case.

Lots of smaller gas suppliers that have gone bust over the years = lots of bottles around, that no-one will take, including the scrap man ?‍♂️

When they find the time to fill up one or two of our of empty gas 4.5k bottles we might get round to being be bothered ?

Maybe the number of empty ballons seen abandoned or kept may have something to do with the situation ? If more ballons were returned as they should be - maybe Calor might be more available ??

Seems a bit strange for people to moan and then read about abandoned / discarded / forgotten about ballons as well as 'repurposing' ..... just a comment.

Every supplier I've tried in the last 3 years has racks of empties that they say Calor won't take even though the truck has space. They have obviously been planning this for years, hence the unavailability of rentals to new customers since 2020.

ha ha i publish then as i do like to pop in now and then :)

First chamber/fire box is well the fire box where the wood goes in.
the burn tunnel which is tapered to a riser tube which makes the fire into a vortex. at the bottom it has a secondary air in take which burns the gasses int e vortex. hot air goes up the riser tube then down inbetween that and the outer ( gas cylinder ) heat exchanger.

then out the flue at the bottom.

Temps get to 460 Deg C in the fore box, heat exchnager to 230Degc. Flue max 70 DegC. I can modfidy it to get more heat out but in the shed is a T shirt job when its -5 outside so gets a bit warm.
In the riser it can get to 1200Dgec so i need to make aproper fire brick rise soon as this is made from 6mm steel which i am seeing how long it lasts.
It burns less wood as it also burns the gasses more than the wood.

few pics of the build

It's quite impressive and I wouldn't mind having a go knocking one up in a couple of years, was it your own design or did you get it on line?

If calor would return the deposit that has been paid maybe people would be willing to return the unused ones, as it is taking a refundable deposit and not refunding is theft in it's own right.

Is that an excuse or an actual fact ?

As most people start a Calor or whatever Co gas 'contract' = when ballon is empty - they go to exchange. I think majority of people forget years later when they no longer need such gas to take ballon back and get the refund.

No. You can only get the "deposit" refunded if you have the original receipt on which you paid the "deposit" - and who has that, many years after the original purchase? Answer - obviously very few.
There's sense in their position - if they didn't insist on a receipt it would encourage theft - but it does mean that a lot of bottles end up "spare".

I agree withy the receipt part ...

It would be better if they just accepted the ballon and paid up ... its not as if the ballon could be anything else.

Its also true for any Gtee ... if you stick just with the 'thermal print' copy - its only a few months later - its hardly readable .... and is why I go out of my way to a) get book stamped and b) scan and print copy of receipt.

Part my own from others, they are called Rocket stove mass heater. but mine is for a workshop and doesnt use ducting to heat other areas although it heats down stairs if i leave open the shed door to the house.
