After reading a posting by actionoptics.co.uk i have been investigating the price and availability of image stabilised binoculars and monoculars for use on board, particularly for bird spotting. Usually magnification above 7x gets difficult on a moving boat but some devices with image stabilisation have significantly higher magnification. Has anyone tried any and can recommend?

Canon 10X30 stabilised binoculars work really well on a moving boat and are also excellent for bird spotting.

Not waterproof however, so some care needed.

+1, they're superb.

In an ideal world I'd have gone for a wider field of view, but simply couldn't afford them as the price rockets above the 10X30's (which in themselves are not cheap)
I wouldn't now buy another pair that aren't image stabilised.

Cheapest I found at the time was photospecialist: https://www.photospecialist.co.uk/canon-10x30-is-ii-binocular-1
but that was a few Months ago so may no longer be the case.
 
+1 for the Canon. Obtained ours around 2001 and have been impressed since on board and used once for bird spotting with others who knew the names . They had a pair of small Swartzof or suchlike name ( more famed for crystals. Maybe)which seemed very good but the canons worked well. I don't know how they compare with any other stabilised versions which might be now available though ?
 
I got hold of a pair of Fujinon Techno-Stabi 12x32 IS bins.
Just excellent in every way. I bought them shortly after coming through the Thames Estuary with a great pair of Monk binoculars and yet, because of the modest sea state, was unable safely to positively identify bouyage.
I have a pair of poor condition Steiner Commanders and have conducted night time light transmission comparisons - the Fujinon are superior and allow you to see images when the Steiners have given up; that, of course, may be down to the condition of the Steiners (in fairness to them) but I don't believe so.
 
I bought my Canon 10x30s at Southhampton in 2000 after having trouble with Danish buoyage in windy conditions. They are brilliant and still work fine. I use lithium batteries for additional life and because they are significantly lighter. Although they are good for birdwatching, I suspect that the better birdwatching models might have a better field of view, though I haven't checked this out. I take care not to get mine wet.
 
got the canon ones at southamton boat show (london Camera Exchange stand) briliant! they do 3 sizes we got the midel one cant remember what that was10x or 12x
 
I have Canon 8 x 25 is and Fujinon 14 x 40 is and Steiner 7 x 50. Fujinon are the best of the 3 by far.

I might be wrong but you might not be comparing apples with apples here. I will however look out for some Fujinon if ever in US if they can be had for 700 a pair but still more than twice the price of my Canons I believe .
